Anyway, I think they've threatened to do this before but nothing ever seemed to come of it.

But yeah, you can whine about this being a slippery slope but it's pretty obvious that they're trying to prevent rampant Luigiposting that damages their brand. If you can go to the top of every /pol/ thread and find a bunch of death threats, then it doesn't matter if the author is [deleted] or not, there will always to be someone who is willing to take the ban to put this comment out for upmarseys.
I'm a bit surprised that they couldn't pressure mods to enforce this though. Maybe it was seen as too burdensome.
