It's the day (or close to it) a lot of the "living paycheck to paycheck" crowd get paid. So typical for there to be a slight spending spike as they fritter money away on useless crap.

Even if they did get paid on the first (I've never heard of that, it's usually 25th or later) they'd still get paid on the Friday and not the weekend.
