There's a right and wrong way to look at the camera. People get personal trainers for this. Sometimes it looks like Kamala is trying to do pro camera mugging moves, but she hasn't mastered not fumbling basic things, so it just makes things so much worse by adding tryhard energy.

Looking like you're full of barely contained, thinly veiled rage and contempt is attractive to people who want to upend the political system, or people who fear it being upended, as long as you're intelligent and high status and not an impotent incel. Looking like a closet serial killer with the piercing eyes and uncanny face adds to his ethos. He's charismatic in a calculated way and what he lacks in natural charm he makes up for by being articulate. Vance strikes people as a man who would get things done. MSNBC r-slurs talking about how he read a blog by some TND chud once only adds to that ethos.
Conservatives like him and liberals fearmonger about him because they both believe he could actually make something happen.
But alas, nothing ever happens.
