US Treasury Secretary Bessent: Access to cheap goods is not the essence of the American dream.
— unusual_whales (@unusual_whales) March 6, 2025
Trump said he'd bring down prices "on Day One".
No backtracking now. He said he could do it in a single day.
I thought we were voting for cheap eggs and an affordable American dream.

The neoliberal American dream is sending all the blue collar jobs to Mexico, the white collar jobs to India, the high tech jobs to China, and importing a slave class of third worlders to do anything else that can't be done by an AI.

we are a service based economy dude, manufacturing is like 10% of of the economy at this point.
it is not reasonable or politically acceptable to frick 90% of the country over so r-slurs can live out their 1940s dream.
even then the policies being pushed will not even bring these things back.
it's even likely manufacturing output declines due to material shortages.

Americans don't understand how rich they are. Maybe because everything seems more expensive than it used to. So
rightoids think factories will make it so working class people can buy a house and support kids on a single job again.
They could just make houses / education / healthcare cheaper and reduce inflation, but those are sacred untouchable cows now so it's easier to blame china

there are tons of jobs that pay well that don't even require degrees lol.
i moved to this state, got a job in a warehouse, and climbed my way to a six figure salary in 2 years. not a single job i got required any degree or experience outside of what i got from working for the company.
what's actually happening, and as much as it pains me to say this, the chuds were right about how lazy our society has become.

plenty of working class jobs might pay well but working at a car factory won't get you six figures
starts around $43k according to google with $80k being the higher end for senior non-management workers

the only reason those are so expensive is the hordes of useless email jobs involved. if you only had to pay for the teachers and the class room, education would be cheap. if you only had to pay for the researchers and facilities, drug making would be cheap. if you only had to pay for the doctors, nurses and equipment, healthcare would be cheap. but we're a "service economy", which mean for each nurse or teacher doing actual work we need at least two administrators who do nothing but make power points, go to meetings, and send emails about meetings.

Kitchen robotics looks like it might finally be about to become a thing. I saw a demo recently where
they seem to have resolved the articulation, pressure

and fine motor control
such that a robot

I could care less about AI chatbots and the other useless crap AI is shoved into. I just want my own Rosy the Robot to keep the house clean and do simple repairs/chores.
Truthfully though, until they make automatic paper towel and soap dispensers work right, I'm not buying into any future tech hype.

Have you noticed the egg prices rising lately? Did it occur to you that maybe building more poultry farms and manufacturing more eggs could help with that? What about rents, has it occurred to you that manufacturing more housing could help with that too?
The idea that Paul sucks off John for $100, then John sucks off Paul for $100, and then they bring their hard earned money to Peter* who actually makes stuff, has certain attractiveness I guess, a certain elegant circularity, but only in a situation when there's so much shit available to everyone that they'd rather have their peepee sucked than buy a marginal egg or a marginal sqft of housing. If you look around and see that most people barely make ends meet, then having a service based economy is not a solution to the problem of overabundance, but a symptom of something being very wrong with the economy.
[*]: or half the time not to Peter but to Chong Ling who generously provides the stuff on credit, for now.

America produces more eggs than we can possibly consume lmao.
egg prices are up due to a bird flu causing widespread culls, and only in some parts of the country.
i stopped reading here because you literally thought the issue with eggs rn was fricking not producing enough lol.
eggs are also an easy one - when you get into material consuming industries by throwing up trade barriers and reducing the supply of raw materials you increase costs.
even if we wanted to go into your housing example - trade barriers again, increase material costs thus making housing more expensive.
Jump in the discussion.

America produces more than enough eggs except it doesn't due to culls, but it does, when it does not doesn't.
Yeah, and producing materials locally is obviously not an option, sucking each other's peepees is more profitable.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
the issue with eggs in America has nothing to do with production lmao, it was an act of nature reducing supply. like you understand if we produced even more eggs than we do, the flu culls would still apply to that increased production, correct? the areas shorted on eggs would still be shorted on eggs, what you're saying makes literally no sense.
America doesn't even import eggs outside of events like this, we have more than enough production.
Let me try to articulate this for you lil guy - when something can be sourced locally it almost always is, when we source something over great distances it is because the supply does not exist. either way we vastly increase the supply by having access to resources in other countries, thus driving costs down either way.

Low quality
bait but it's Friday
and I'm going
to fall for it.
Can't get rid of many of them but anything
like factory work get the poors in other countries to do it.
The ones that are lower skilled absolutely.
We keep most of those.
The point
is you don't try and guess
what comparative advantage and productivity is going
to look like because that's communism
and doesn't work.
Us making higher skilled products and services for the world
makes us fantastically wealthy
and fat because we don't have to do back breaking
jobs. I want to die at 95 from cancer
not at 45 from a factory accident.
People willingly moving to another country
is not slavery. Also https://www.nber.org/papers/w18307
Chuds hate immigration
because they want to be poor. They hate free trade because they want to be poor and are too stupid
to understand there
isn't something
magic
they makes trade between
cities in the same state, states
in the same countries or countries in the same world
different. It's amazing
how horseshoe
communists and chuds are.
Technology also replaces skills not humans. The arguments about AI replacing humans is r-slurred
neo-luddite bullshit, what do you think
has happened since industrialization? Did the transition
from agrarian to industrial
put all humans out of work? How about computerization? Technology
increases human
productivity increasing the value of labor, you get paid more.
Democracy was a mistake.
