Because there was a lib wave and with tumblr failing all the users went to reddit.

Why now?

With Trump in power a second time it becomes clear even to the average once a week reddit user that reddit is a useless echo chamber disconnected from reality. That plus the fact that redditors kept claiming that one republican or another needed to be killed to create a better world and some of the news/ other social media sites finding out about it.
