not to mention the general dogshit build quality. i remember a family member buying one very early on and the ceiling trim falling apart in a brand new car. also holy shit the regenerative brakes were so aggressive i slammed forward even touching the brake pedal. im sure theyre "better" now, but the amount of telemetry is a complete non-argument. i couldnt imagine having my transportation be beholden to musk right now.

I was just talking to someone about this earlier. Everyone in my state who wants a truck (and there are a lot of them) wants an F-150 or a Dodge RAM or another similar sized truck. They want them as big as possible and they don't mind dropping like 80 or 90K on them, apparently. The Cybertruck has no market here, it's a product for nobody. I've seen one so far in my city.
There were a lot of them around Austin, though, I guess, probably employee discount at work.

Can't beat an F150, tbh
Silverados used to be good but kinda fell off imo, Ram was never even in the picture and Tundra is okay but overpriced
I'll admit my grandpa and uncles and dad hated Dodge so I'm just carrying on the 80 year tradition

The entire automotive market is about EVs now, it's just going to Chinese ones instead of Tesla
Now that all those pesky mechanical parts are gone you can basically start an EV company using 100% off the shelf components so it's perfect for tech companies to swoop in and push all the "traditional companies" who fail to build up software teams out of the way
Jump in the discussion.

Chinese EVs got jumpstarted by the fact that their government kind of sort of just banned new gas cars for personal use, which instantly created a massive market for them. Tesla competes there but is about 20% more expensive than cars in the same market segment without really being better. My family just bought an ev recently (zeekr 007)for ~30k$ so we were shopping around for one.
Chinese tech companies like xiaomi and huawei (both mainly make phones) also came out recently with their own cars, with the xiaomi one being especially popular since its appearance is a copy of a porsche but at a price of 30k

If your long term monopolized industry is ever at a point where new players can get a foothold it's already over for you
Traditional companies burdened by decades of technical debt exist only because of the massive hurdles required to compete. Once someone can show up and start with a clean slate they're poised to run circles around heavy-hitters basically immediately

It went from in the 200s to a peak of like 480 starting the day after the election. It probably won't crash much more at this point since it's largely back to its pre-bubble value but anyone who was still buying it at 450 or whatever got hosed and deserved it.

Hasn't musk already sold most of his Tesla shares?
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
No, and even if he wanted to he couldn't cash out all of his Tesla stock. The vast majority of his net worth is fricking imaginary and is tied up in shares that can't be liquidated without severe consequences. If he tried selling off all his holdings, he'd relinquish control of what he does have at Tesla (like 13%) in addition to sparking a massive sell-off that would gigacuck share prices, and it would be fricking impossible to realize their current market value. He's strategically borrowed against a portion of these shares as collateral, but hasn't actually liquidated anything

As of March 2024, Elon Musk owned approximately 12.9% of Tesla's outstanding shares. This stake made him the company's largest individual shareholder. Over the years, Musk has periodically sold portions of his Tesla holdings for various reasons, including funding other ventures and philanthropic efforts. For instance, in late 2024, he donated 268,000 Tesla shares, valued at about $108.2 million, to unnamed charities.
As of December 2024, Elon Musk owns approximately 42% of SpaceX's equity and holds about 79% of the voting control.
