The time cost of finding an artist to hire in the first place is greatest.
Anyone actually good tends to be more expensive, and sometimes reclusive. You have to look at the portfolio, but artists can super cherry pick what they choose to show (after you've spent a long time seeing bad portfolios) so you try to find any minimum good recent work to make sure you're not buying crap.
Then you wait a week or two and hopefully not seven because it turns out they're crazy

200$ is a lot of money for 1 png, plus 5 month wait time, an hour or two to explain your idea, explain corrections etc, pay the fricker, keep checking in if it's finished..
I wanted to try creating my own visual novel one day but i don't have 30.000$ ready or artists friends, so i'm hoping AI gets good at creating consistent sprites of a character without having to train it myself

Yeah furry artists are expensive as shit, all the ones i checked are like.. 1 colored character, simple bg or no bg, 100$. You need like 5 characters with 10 sprites and another 20 characters with 3 sprites if you're doing a big vn
Then there's the problem of what happens if your artist ditches you during VN development: you gotta pay another artist to rework all past art and hope this one ALSO doesn't ditch you.

Even the cost cost is ridiculous. A friend recommended an artist for a small business I was in. We needed someone to make a a logo (that we had a general idea of what we wanted) planned for patches & tshirts that and they requested a 5 figure flat rate AND a percentage of all profit made off all the items. Last I saw, he was working at a Panera bread.

The artists that do commission on social media are nuts in general. Many of them require you to sign a contract saying they maintain copyright over the imagery and you have to ask for permission to use the art for anything strictly outside of personal use.
