As the resident vietnamese riceburner, I can confirm that vietnamese people usually love americans and try to emulate us. They especially like trump and see him as the quintissential american businesman. I often got asked the question "why do some americans dislike him?"

Leading up to their civil war, the communists were comparing their struggle to US's revolutionary war.

Granted their government was crap, but the US shouldn't have helped the French help us into that civil war. Just sit back (or maybe tell France to frick off), and let Vietnam come to its senses, which it eventually did anyway.

Yeah there's a lot parallels. Some of the rubber tree plantations started by the French are still around, and lots of old French government buildings in downtown saigon. Though there's a sense of wonder and admiration towards the old french buildings. They are quite beautiful, really rare to see things like that survive a communist takeover.

The most radical elements of the viet cong died during the war, and the postwar intervention in cambodia helped reunify the people. HCM not becoming a tyrant like a lot of communist revolutionaries also helped a lot (cause he died).
