There's a shit ton of Marseys that are just recolors of already existing art and like 95% of Marseys are edits of the originals which is still edits of already existing art so imo, either tooka's Marseys are valid or else all the other Marseys that are also edits in some way are not valid

Reskinned Pepes are not Marseys. I wish @tooka would just do a bit more to fully Marsey-fy his works. That being said, I will never not think that this Marsey is fricking hilarious and one of my all-time favourites

Your aesthetic analysis of tooka’s art is superb, valuable, and has been saved. I think it borders the line between nihilism (absolute Marsey freedom) and structuralism (Marsey is a product of her circumstances). To me, this sort of liminal depiction is not amateur or unintended - this is intentional, as evidenced by the also obviously intended blurred distinction between Marsey and Pepe. Not only is the art itself sound, but I feel that the concept is also sound, matching the visual aesthetic. In short, @tooka is a master artist.

I hate tooka. He isn't a total hack though, he makes better "marseys" than I ever did. But I don't see them as true Marsey.

Marseys need to be cute, because the more dangerous something is, the cuter it needs to be to get people to let their guard down. Marsey is a real firestarter with some dangerous ideas, so he needs to be cute as heck.

I think Tooka's Pepe hybrids are a homage to the fact that Pepe was the original experiment that inevitably led to Marsey. Pepe was cute enough to impact the 2016 election by a few points, but he wasn't cute enough to do a massive change to the cultural narrative. Pepe was some mid-grade meme magic, but what we want to do with Marsey is a fundamental rewrite of reality itself.

To me, this discussion about whether his Marseys are valid is like discussing whether our Cro-Magnon ancestors have citizenship rights. Sure they do, but you wouldn't want to go on a date with one, and since they no longer exist, it's kind of irrelevant.

Not reading all that shit but we have so many shit marseys that it doesnt really matter if there are a few more. Personally I dont like them all that much cause Im not a big pepe fan. I guess you could add a new category for pepes and put them in there, but they certainly should be added to the emoji roster.

Marsey is a cat ( lives matter), so having the big lips and bulgy eyes makes it look very un-Marey-like. It has to pass the Marsey-Turing test: If you ask a random person what they see, are they going to answer "a miscolored Pepe" or "a weird cat"?

I think my issue is that it's just the same gimmick again and again. I like some of the reskin pepes and using recognizable art styles with Marsey is fun. but continuously using pepe templates is just getting stale.
