No man deserves to be murdered for beer. If he needs it that bad just let him have it, or just call the police if it's really that big of a problem.

Just another gun happy amerimutt

It's not the beer, it's the principle. If you let somebody steal from you without retribution, all the other narcissistic sociopaths will think they can do it too. Since 15% of the human population is made up of narcissistic sociopaths, obviously this is a big problem. That's why it's so important to make an example out of thieves.

And sure, maybe it would be better from a long-term perspective to just exterminate all the narcissistic sociopaths, but we're nowhere near that point yet. Even if you could get society to unite behind killing a whole lot of people who totally have it coming, we don't even have a great way to detect these people. So in the meantime, we just have to make sure there are very strong deterrents to frighten these vermin out of acting on their selfishness. They need to be terrified enough of the consequences of stealing from you that their fear strongly outweighs their greed.

Eye for an eye (or in this case your brains on the sidewalk for a beer) makes the whole world blind.

Or brainless... but clearly that already happened, so why not make it literal?

No, it just stops thieves. Your parable is based on feuding families. If the example is gang rivalry, you could still have a point. But often you have lone parasites attacking a family. And the neutered response and unnecessary civility toward these people is not virtuous. The response is not overkill. You could, however, argue that it murdering all the thief's relatives, and anyone who defends them, root&stem, could maybe, possibly, be unwarranted.

In a functioning society you have courts, law enforcement, and government to enforce a social contract and ensure that everyone plays by the rules. This makes society safer, more trusting, and less violent, as offenders are punished, and individuals don't need to seek retribution on their own, preventing the spiral of violence that occurs in pre-modern societies.

Of course, when this breaks down and the law no longer applies to broad segments of the population, individuals can either choose to be victimized regularly, or respond with violence.

All I'm saying is, be prepared to defend yourself and your property, no one is coming to save you.

Biblical stories are mainly applicable to small feuding tribes, aka families. However, your comment is actually a criticism of a biblical declaration, so I don't know exactly what you're trying to say. You can argue around the etymology but it still has been most commonly used to argue against escalated retaliation among tribal squabbles... all irrelevant to ventilating some junkie in the post modern world.
