Or, alternatively, on their assumption of other people's motivations. It's kind of a hard knee-jerk reaction against the way this sort of research was conducted a few decades ago--basically academics ignored self-reporting information as unreliable. Maybe it's the STEM in me, but I feel like there's got to be a better way than discarding all personal testimony or 100% trusting all personal testimony
