I read the comics, didn't play the game, but it worked because it kinda made sense. Joker killed Lois Lane while she was pregnant, so Superman just snaps and does what everyone's been thinking Supers should do for ages. For most of the first issue, Batman comes across as a paranoid man lost in grief and fake morals.
Plus it's fairly interesting as a crossover because it's not "Superman expy fights worse written Batman", it's actually Superman vs Batman.
