Story hour: The man with three hands

There once was a man with three hands.

Wherever he went there were screams and shouts,

There were many fainting ladies,

and ever more the frowns.

Sometimes the men would come together,

with sheriff at the front.

They would ask him to leave,

and beg him to never return.

The man felt left out by the world.

That did not wish to give him home or hearth.

He felt himself just another weary soul.

Who they did unjustly hurt.

He decided to join the circus.

Sadly there too he was abandoned.

It was as if among even the greatest dredges of humanity.

He was the worst of them all.

One day in his early 30's.

At a campfire all alone.

He was approached by the sound of hooves.

Raising eyes, he saw an Arab man with a goatish beard and an ancient robe.

He asked him my son, would you like to read the minds of men.

To know that yours is not the greatest burden?

The man thought long then said yes.

With a breeze the Arab was gone.

For the first time frightened the man blew out the flame.

He went on his way to beg by the river.

There he came upon a camp.

Of hobos and alcoholics with poisoned livers.

It was full of the din of noise.

He heard them all.

He heard of all the sins, the murders, r*pes, and tortures.

Committed by them all.

Horrified he left.

For the first time content to be alone.

Then he went on his way.

To another town.

Once more passing by the frowning neighbors and shouting men.

He heard their secret desires.

He heard them all loud and clear.

All the cheats, thieves, killers,

The women whom other men's children they did sire.

Finally he realized as they kicked him out.

That he should have never wept.

For no man did ever deserve the company of such women and men.

After a long road of a thousand thousand secrets.

The three handed man finally learned.

His sins were the least of the bunch.

It was simply that he wore it on him, visible to the world.

So he took a knife, sharpened as well as he could.

With one whack and slice that's all it took, his sin was cut off of him.

He still remembered who he was.

He still was the same man.

His secrets now though were kept shut inside him.

Never to be seen by hypocrites.

He went on to live a better life.

Of smiles, surrounded by neighbors; all polite.

All of them filled with lies as heavy or heavier than his own.

So remember well the moral children.

Be careful when you open up to the world, be wary of what you tell the stranger, that you met on the road.

The United States killed al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri in a drone strike over the weekend, three people briefed on the operation told POLITICO.

The strike was conducted by the CIA, according to two of the people, with one saying it took place in Kabul.

Al-Zawahri was an Egyptian who took over al Qaeda after the U.S. killed its longtime leader, Osama bin Laden, in 2011.

He never achieved the household name status of his predecessor, but al-Zawahri’s killing is nonetheless a major win for the United States in the ongoing struggle against Islamist terrorism, especially as the United Nations warns that the terrorist group is outpacing its peers β€” like the Islamic State β€” as a long-term global threat.

In a statement to reporters, a senior Biden administration official said β€œover the weekend, the United States conducted a counterterrorism operation against a significant Al Qaeda target in Afghanistan. The operation was successful and there were no civilian casualties.”

President Joe Biden is due to give a speech about the operation later Monday. The National Security Council declined to comment.

The announcement comes nearly a year after the United States finished withdrawing from Afghanistan, the country it invaded in 2001 following the Sept. 11 attacks masterminded by bin Laden. The Taliban militant group have taken over Afghanistan, and the United States has insisted that they do not allow their soil to be used by terrorist groups like al Qaeda.

Col. Joseph Buccino, a spokesperson for U.S. Central Command, declined to comment on the specifics of the strike. β€œWe have no operational information at this time,” he said.

A spokesperson for the Pentagon said the military has not recently conducted any strikes in the area.

The Senate Intelligence committee has been briefed on the strike, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) told POLITICO. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called the operation β€œan important accomplishment,” adding β€œThis strike should be a message to terrorists near and far: if you conspire to kill Americans, we will find and kill you.”

Al-Zawahri’s presence in Kabul is likely to worsen relations between Washington and the Taliban, but it also boosts the U.S. claim that it still has what it calls β€œover the horizon” capability when it comes to intelligence on terrorist activity in Afghanistan β€” despite no longer having combat troops there.

β€œThe strike that killed Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri is a major success of U.S. counter-terrorism efforts. A result of countless hours of intelligence collection over many years,” said Mick Mulroy, a former Pentagon official and retired CIA paramilitary operations officer.

Calling the killing β€œa landmark operation,” former top Obama administration official Ben Rhodes told POLITICO it β€œalso demonstrates that Biden didn’t need to keep troops in Afghanistan to maintain a counterterrorism capability.”

A South Asian official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic, expressed shock that al-Zawahri was β€œroaming in Kabul.”

For years, terrorism researchers and others had believed that al-Zawahri was hiding in Pakistan β€” where bin Laden was found. Some observers thought al-Zawahri was likely somewhere in the teeming Pakistani city of Karachi.

For the Biden administration, β€œthis [strike] will deflect a bit from issues like how the Afghanistan withdrawal was a disaster and reduced U.S. capability on the counterterrorism front,” the South Asian official said.

Al-Zawahri, a physician, founded Egyptian Islamic Jihad, a militant group that merged with al Qaeda in the late 1990s. He had been indicted for his suspected role in the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya.

It was not immediately clear who would succeed al-Zawahri as the leader of the terrorist group.

In December 2020, Brookings Institution terrorism expert Daniel Byman said one of the big questions of his leadership was how he would bequeath control to his successor. β€œFor now, there is no obvious successor with Zawahri’s broad name recognition and respect within the jihadi world,” he wrote, adding: β€œAny successor will also benefit from the decline of ISIS, which is far weaker and less inspiring now that it has lost the caliphate.”

Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesperson for the Taliban, tweeted Monday that β€œan air strike was carried out on a residential house in Sherpur area of Kabul city.”
