It's because their job was to say 'gay bad,' and maybe hastle them but not actually stop gay at the source. You can be a non repping homophobe if you actually have a realistic plan to end gayness, and incorporate working on it in small chunks into your life, like richard stallman isn't a secret microsoft fan, and richard the lionheart wasn't a secret muslim. That would require tranhumanist intervention in the sexual and romantic drives though, which is actually what's going to end pedophilia and abusive relationships and let us build a better world in the end. And the people working on that? Probably don't even talk about it that much, just proud of their jobs and brain surgeons and endocrinologists and such, and enjoy the other parts of life as well.
