Ultimately, religion provides a code and a set of moral values to live by. Billions of people have used these teachings to improve their lives. Atheism is not a tool for improvement and it shows up in many of history's evils. The Soviets were militantly atheist, as were many other totalitarian states. In current society, it is the main contributor to the breakdown of social order.

Social norms in cultures that have adopted abrahamic are heavily influenced by Christianity, but if you swapped it for anything or nothing then people would follow whatever rules are in place.
This is straight-up historical revisionism. 20th-century totalitarian states quashed religion because they didn't want to compete with another seat of power. Most civilizations in human history have been both authoritarian and religious, and religious mandates have caused the death and enslavement of millions.
