I think it's because a lot of Protestantism goes very heavily on the Pauline epistles for doctrine, so it's awkward when you want to say that gay s*x and the rest of it is totally fine and Christian, since St Paul is instructing the local churches "I heard one of you guys was banging his step mom. Stop that shit". So they have to fall back on "Well Paul corrupted it all" and "Jesus never said anything about abortion in the Gospels so that means He was pro-choice" and other rubbish.
