Unironic question Mr. Indian. Why do Indians always use "lakh" when speaking English?

Why would units be different based on language? :marseyconfused:

Lakh's an Indian word. No one else knows what it means unless they are around a lot of Indian English speakers. A native English speaker would say "One point two million". And for just 1 digit we'd say hundred thousand. Based on your answer I'm guessing Indian's don't even think about this and just view it as a common unit of measurement.

I'm sure they use it abroad but why would you care about foreigners not understanding when discussing stuff among Indians?

One thing I'll admit tho is it gets a bit annoying with really big numbers which we tend to get a lot of with 1 usd at 80 inr. After crore you just repeat the system so then you have lakh crores and thankfully I've never seen a crore crore till now but with 5% inflation I suppose I'll see it before I die.

You have to admit speaking entirely English and then using something like "lakh" is bizarre, no? English speakers typically use "k" to represent one thousand. Seems less cumbersome.

>English speakers typically use "k"

yeah, typically.

it's only weird if you aren't familiar with it.

Using L to represent lakh is also quite common.

:marseyshrug: It's just I'll be reading something in English and then bam suddenly it's an Indian unit of measurement and I don't remember how much it is. Maybe it's just a bigger thing for me since I've worked in tech where it sometimes feels like Indians are the majority.

We think in lakhs and crores of rupees. So whenever someone says stuff in millions or 100k of USD, my mind just blanks and needs to take a minute to get a sense of it. I guess it's that same the other way around.

They don't limit it to when speaking among indians though they do it to everyone lmao

I mean you learn pretty quickly so it doesn't matter but it's always stuck out to me that they all do it all the time

What is the % of your income that you pay in taxes to the Indian Government? I am pretty relieved as a Currycel that at least now this new tax slab is more sensible than the previous one

It's even weirder when you consider Indians claim to have invented Arabic numerals. If so why don't they use base 10 numbers instead of crore lakh inr or whatever

why don't they use base 10 numbers instead of crore lakh inr or whatever

lakh and crore are base 10 numbers lmao

and 1 lakh = 10^5 and 1 crore 10^7

Just crazy that normal people use units at 10^3, 6, 9, 12, etc in a nice easy pattern

And Indians are like 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, 17...

Just incredible that they can take a base 10 system and make it so r-slurred
