Weekly Mass Discussion Thread #7

Hello friends, my neighbor @HadalZoneShill has yet to post the weekly thread so I shall do so instead. The readings this week focus greatly upon the idea of heaven as a great feast or banquet and deal with who will be accepted into heaven and how you should attempt to get there as well. Here they are:

First Reading


On this mountain the LORD of hosts

will provide for all peoples

a feast of rich food and choice wines,

juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines.

On this mountain he will destroy

the veil that veils all peoples,

the web that is woven over all nations;

he will destroy death forever.

The Lord GOD will wipe away

the tears from every face;

the reproach of his people he will remove

from the whole earth; for the LORD has spoken.

On that day it will be said:

"Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us!

This is the LORD for whom we looked;

let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!"

For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain.

Isaiah 25:6-10


Second Reading


Brothers and sisters:

I know how to live in humble circumstances;

I know also how to live with abundance.

In every circumstance and in all things

I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry,

of living in abundance and of being in need.

I can do all things in him who strengthens me.

Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress.

My God will fully supply whatever you need,

Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and elders of the people

in parables, saying,

"The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king

who gave a wedding feast for his son.

He dispatched his servants

to summon the invited guests to the feast,

but they refused to come.

A second time he sent other servants, saying,

'Tell those invited: "Behold, I have prepared my banquet,

my calves and fattened cattle are killed,

and everything is ready; come to the feast."'

Some ignored the invitation and went away,

one to his farm, another to his business.

The rest laid hold of his servants,

mistreated them, and killed them.

The king was enraged and sent his troops,

destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

Then he said to his servants, 'The feast is ready,

but those who were invited were not worthy to come.

Go out, therefore, into the main roads

and invite to the feast whomever you find.'

The servants went out into the streets

and gathered all they found, bad and good alike,

and the hall was filled with guests.

But when the king came in to meet the guests,

he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment.

The king said to him, 'My friend, how is it

that you came in here without a wedding garment?'

But he was reduced to silence.

Then the king said to his attendants, 'Bind his hands and feet,

and cast him into the darkness outside,

where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.'

Many are invited, but few are chosen."

Matthew 22:1-14


I've gone to 2 masses so far with different homilies, but they spoke on the same things so I think the message is quite important. In the Gospel, Jesus is very clear about what he is describing in the very first line, "the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son." Who is invited is what is more important to this, but it is also important to note what is said about heaven itself as well. This ties into the first reading, heaven is a feast with rich food and choice wines or a wedding feast. The king first invites specific guests who I believe are meant to be the old Jews. The ones who rejected his message were the ones who were living in the lifetime of Jesus or before Jesus who, even after receiving his invitation to come into heaven, refused him as the savior and so they were sentenced to Heck for eternity. It is important to make the distinction here that these are not the modern day Jews or at least not all of them as they still have a chance to convert (they are still alive after all) and may still have a chance to do so after they die as well and simply being a Jew does not mean you necessarily renounce Christ as many are born into their faith as a Jew and don't seek out further information than that. Next, everyone, good and bad alike, are allowed into heaven. This is the new covenant which includes not only Jews but also Gentiles, even those who have sinned as they may repent for their sins and be saved. Jesus, in his time, walked among both righteous men as well as prostitutes and tax collectors and they were all accepted by him. Finally, the king finds one among those already in his feast who is not worthy to be there; I think this is someone who entered into the kingdom of heaven but still holds some belief that is sinful or is unwilling to give up some sin he has committed. This person is thrown out of heaven to a place where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Through the Gospel, we can see who will be allowed into heaven, but the readings don't stop there as the second reading gives us insight into how we can become worthy to get into heaven. God will supply for us whatever we need and it is through God that we should find our way into heaven if we only ask for his help. Paul states that he has been in all circumstances and has persevered because God helped him do so and because Paul has been able in any situation, there should be no excuse regardless of where we are in life as God will provide for us whatever we need.

Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures:

The stone that the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone;

by the Lord has this been done,

and it is wonderful in our eyes?

Therefore, I say to you,

the kingdom of God will be taken away from you

and given to a people that will produce its fruit."

The Gospel here is the one that stuck out to me most to me. The parable seems to be an obvious allegory: the Jews were given so much by God, yet ignore his will and even kill his messengers and his son. Seeing that they will not accept Christianity, God warns that the Gentiles are to become the inheritors of his kingdom, as seen with modern Christians mostly not being Jews.

New Bible Translation!

I have had revealed to me the Truth and the way of GOD, and I will be creating a new trans-lation of the bible, one chapter per day which reveals the majesty and wonder of god's way, emphasizing god's love and acceptance of trans women. My current plan is to interpolate between the new american bible, which I've read, the king james bible, which is said to be poetic, and my divine revelation (I'm forgetful and need the others to prompt me.) These readings, especially the last one, tackle the theme of long-time sinners becoming redeemed. @Cho-Dai @ggggbabybabybaby @NoUntakenNames01 in this thread you talked about how you found deathbed conversions r-slurred. It's not like there's limited seats in Heaven or a limited amount of goodness God can give. If someone sinful sincerely changed their ways, no matter how late, is that not a good thing?

It seems like recently, the readings have focused on standards of behavior for Christians. While last week was about the necessity of spreading the Gospel, this week is about the necessity of forgiveness. We ourselves are sinners. With two notable exceptions :marseyjesus: :marseyimmaculate:, no human has ever been deserving of Heaven. Only through the grace of God are we capable of returning to Him. In this, God has shown us impossibly great mercy, and has forgiven us for impossibly many transgressions. Who are we, then, to refuse forgiveness and to hold grudges against our fellow men? "Judge lest you be judged" comes from earlier in Matthew, sharing a similar revelation. Now, many nonbelievers will attempt to weaponize these passages against us !christians. "Jesus said not to judge, so who are you to criticize me?" The message here is not to declare others darned, or ourselves superior. We are given free reign to oppose sin. "Hate the sin, not the sinner" is a common adage that applies well here: you can oppose what someone does without judging them.

Today's readings focus around the greatest commandment: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." The first reading's message is clear: God's love is to be shared. Those who receive it, but keep it to themselves, are as bad as those who deny it. Matthew's reading reassures us that God understands those who try in earnest to share the Gospel, but find that it falls upon deaf ears. And Paul's epistle reminds us to be awesome towards each other :marseyfluffy:

We like to have weekly discussion threads of many things: vidya, movies, books, animu... but not something that already is on a weekly basis: the Sacrifice of the Mass!

Let's rectify this.

Here are the readings from today's Mass:

Reading 1

You duped me, O LORD, and I let myself be duped;

you were too strong for me, and you triumphed.

All the day I am an object of laughter;

everyone mocks me.

Whenever I speak, I must cry out,

violence and outrage is my message;

the word of the LORD has brought me

derision and reproach all the day.

I say to myself, I will not mention him,

I will speak in his name no more.

But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart,

imprisoned in my bones;

I grow weary holding it in, I cannot endure it.

Reading 2

I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God,

Today's readings center around the theme of God's plan. Something that all of us must realize is that however good we are, God is better. Whatever plans we hold for ourselves are inferior to God's. Since He is all-knowing and all-good, His designs put ours to shame. Not only that, whatever God desires is good for us. To be Christian is to follow Christ's way. It is to be humble and admit that to do the will of God is better than anything you could do independently. To sin is to go against God's will because you believe your own to be better. In this way, pride is the root of all other sins: in order to sin, you must believe that your way is better than God's way. Uhhh yeah that's what I have, I'm not quite a preacher (yet) but I think doing this will be good for my faith and hopefully can help yours too.

i feel like my wife and i attended a friends wedding at a church, and they were fairly religious so there was a lot of bible reading and praying etc, and being atheists, we like just sat there in silence and tried to be respectful, and at one point though, near the end, the priest goes, do you know what it is about christians that makes their marriages so special??? theirs are the like only ones that are truly blessed by god. now, the priest knew very well that many of those in attendance were not christians, and so it was absolutely a slap in the face for us, not because we believe in god but because the message was clearly that our marriage is inferior, and i really had to fight hard against the urge to get up out of the pew right then and there and walk out with my middle finger extended in the air, but out of respect for our friends i didnt budge (apart from shaking silently with anger bc man was i pissed)

im literally screaming, who the frick do these butthole priests think they are to essentially spit on our face in a setting where we cant respond, like because we actually have enough respect for our christian friends to not shit on their marriage??

edit 2: thanks for literally all the feedback, and many have voiced the opinion that im overreacting; since im an atheist anyway, what difference does it make to me what literally any priest says??? to be clear, its not about a priest talking about my marriage or anyones being blessed or not blessed by whatever deity, and its that we showed up to celebrate our friends wedding because we were invited to do so, but by quietly accepting their priests comment about their marriage being blessed and ours not being blessed, my takeaway is that these people we considered to be our friends accept this idea that their marriage is superior to ours, though they may never say it directly to our face (again, it doesnt matter that in reality nobodys is blessed), and until this particular moment, our religious differences were never an issue and in fact were never even discussed, and maybe im naive to have not seen it coming

im literally screaming, edit 3: im an ex-jw and this was my first wedding at a non-jw christian church, and i had no idea what was going to happen but didnt expect the person presiding over the wedding to throw shade at like 25% of the attendees, and lesson learned i guess
