https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarnak_Farm_incident

A United States F-16 fighter jet piloted by Air National Guard Major Harry Schmidt dropped a laser-guided 500-pound (230 kg) bomb on the Canadians, who were conducting a night firing exercise at Tarnak Farms.

The deaths were the first of Canada's war in Afghanistan, and the first Canadian deaths in a combat zone since the Korean War.

Barely related but pretty funny. :marseythumbsup2:

One of the issues highlighted by the Inquiry related to the use of amphetamines in combat.[9][10][11] In testimony it was revealed that Schmidt and Umbach were told by their superiors to use "go pills" on their missions, and the airmen blamed the incident on the drugs.

It's funny reading how bongs in desert storm planted bigger and bigger bong flags on their tanks in hope of A-10 not attacking them (and it only half worked)

Its unironically a point of debate on why A-10s love friendly fire so much when aircraft with more CAS missions and worse avionics still don't get anywhere near their number per mission flown.

Oh gee, why does a jet that at the time had basically zero advanced target acquisition systems, and relied solely on pilots seeing things with their own eyes and shooting a lot of bullets at them make a lot of mistakes?

The A-10 is bad and almost every other jet in the US arsenal is better for CAS fight me

It was still achieving the highest friendly fire rate by every possible metric once it had the same or better targetting systems than other aircraft in the same role. Its a bad plane that attracts bad people.

I also like the

>muh survives battle damage

Cope. The A-10 only takes battle damage because it's a fat slow hog that attracts AA and manpads because it floats around at low altitude moving slowly and piggily while an F-16, F-15 or B-1B can just blast things with precision from 30,000ft and skirt out of danger at Mach 1.5 no problem

It gets worse when you remember what the A-10 was planned for (taking out Soviet tank columns). US military planners expected that in the event of a conventional war every last A-10 pilot and airframe would be dead within the first two weeks. !historychads :marseydarkxd:

Like genuinely why would you respond to a military force whose entire air defense was focused around powerful SAMs with a no stealth no distance non maneuverable gunner plane as CAS.

Because they'd use the other part of their air force (and tactical missiles) to deal with SAMs? What part of close-air combat do you not understand?

It's unironically one of the worst fixed wing projects ever accomplished. It was developed at a time when the USAF was proving out laser guided systems, hi-tech interdictors like the F-111 were coming online, the the F-4 phantom was being fitted with f-14 targeting systems for strike roles. The A-10 was a terrible use of funds and was a huge distraction for the role of the air force, where they should have focused on fast-and-capable interdictors or cheap low-and-slow counterinsurgency prop places like the Super Tucano.

Instead we have a fat hog that costs as much as an F-15 and basically is a slow bullet magnet

:marseysoldieramerica: I don't know exactly where the enemy is, so I can't laser-guide a bomb there. Okay, just drop one bomb there, and we'll sit around waiting for hours for the next plane to drop a bomb or two nearby.

Do you BIPOCs not think this through?

The funniest part was commies responded with the same, and mounted a massive gun with even more recoil on what would otherwise be their one modern CAS.

It fried random systems in minutes of shooting :marseyfine: :mar!seymini:

They did a big upgrade of all the targeting systems decades ago. That's why they haven't been shredding marines nonstop for the last 2 wars.
