Tbh, this is a great example of why many cultures have a comittment to never surrendering, not just to inspirie bravery in their fighters butt simply due to the fact that being in custody of the enemy is often as good if not woree than death.

They hadn't never surrendered in practice, most warfare and especially sieges before modern age was decided by morale.

Especially before guns, sieging cities is expensive, and ties down your armies. So you want to do everything you can to encourage your enemies to surrender, and that includes having a reputation of keeping your word. On the flip sides, you also want a reputation of cruelty towards those that don't surrender fast enough. Romans :marseymarmotroman: , for example, had a custom when if the city failed to surrender until first ram touched its walls, everyone inside, men woman and child, was killed.
