Yeah, even western countries didn't have universal adult franchise till 1900s. It was absurd to introduce democracy in a country in India's state. Its what you get when elites were raised in a bubble then shipped off to english universities. The funny thing is it effectively wasn't a democracy for a long 20-30 years. INC dominated every national and state election till 60s, first non INC national govt was a brief coalition in 70s and then finally 80s when the party collapsed with all the adult dynasts dead. If they had wished to, there'd barely have been any opposition to dictatorial rule, there wasn't when they imposed Emergency for the most part. But they had some deep fetish for democrazy.
