Firstly, there is a level on which Genesis is written as a polemic against other ANE creation stories by its human author and this context aids rather than detracts from our understanding, as with calling the 1st century Jews the "Synagogue of Satan" in Revelation. More importantly, however, it tells us the undeniable truth of the fallen nature of mankind. The Catechism says this:

CCC 404 How did the sin of Adam become the sin of all his descendants? The whole human race is in Adam "as one body of one man".1 By this "unity of the human race" all men are implicated in Adam's sin, as all are implicated in Christ's justice.
