Little-known fact: Back before Substack and just having a blog, when the mainstream media was running everything, they would coordinate with each to make up a very simple story. Dan Quayle is an r-slur because of the potatoe thing, Dukakis is a strag because he rode in a tank (I don't even understand how this works), that kind of thing. They would smear whoever they wanted with some kind of gossip. Boomers didn't have our technology but they had our genes, they were basically the same as us. So the TV tells you to laugh at someone and not take them seriously and you... don't laugh but start thinking nobody takes this guy seriously. You may hate social media and how it brought about Trump and all that, but there were a heck of a lot of problems with the media back then.
