:marseybegging: Give me some wine recommendations for Thanksgiving dinner (<$20 a bottle) :marseywinemom:

I usually drink gin or vodka alone so I don't know what wine to serve at a group event. I don't want to ask my older relatives to bring anything, they'll insist water is fine (what we had last year) and my brother will bring coke zero if I ask. Please include some non-reds, my mom sez red gives her headaches. :marseybegging:

Drinking in moderation is fine but OP said he(she?) drinks hard liquor alone which is probably not a great habit to get into.

It's around $20 (on sale), and good enough that wine snobs seem to appreciate it. Plus it's tasty :marseylickinglips:

New Zealand whites taste nice and are cheap and cheerful. I like Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc and Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc. For red, Chilean cabernet sauvignons are good, like Casa Silva Dona Dominga Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon Valle de Colchagua. Dark Horse brand anything is cheap and I love it all.

And I wouldn't turn my nose up at boxed wine. They are pretty good and a better bargain, like Black Box or Bota :marseydrunk:

I've already put some black box cartons on my next grocery store order and going to see what else they carry from everyone's recommendations, then I plan to hit up some liquor stores on Monday and see what I can find. I decided to keep my house stocked in wine until New Years since we will have lots of little get togethers

Under 20 bucks is difficult in the US, lots of crap under that price point. That guy I'm subscribed to gave a list of cheaper recs for Thanksgiving, maybe check it out, the wines are all listed in the description.

A lot of European wines are not available under that price point, even cru Beaujolais will be difficult to find. I know that Guigal cรดte du Rhรดne is very popular on /r/wine and low priced but if you're looking for the perfect turkey pairing this ain't it - great value otherwise.

I'd avoid American wines since I've never had a cheap good one (but I'm a europoor so I have a bias), and try to look for value buys in Spain that has lots of good affordable stuff or south America.

>my mom sez red gives her headaches

Stop drinking garbage with high levels of residual sugar in the wine like Meiomi.

If they won't drink reds and they are usually fine with water then they won't care how it tastes anyways, so it doesn't really matter what you get as long as it is not Bay Bridge.

Get a Kendall Jackson chardonnay and put it in the freezer for 30 min before opening and serving it. Otherwise try a Le Vieille Ferme rosรฉ and likewise give it the freezer treatment. Both are actually quite nice and drinkable, despite not being very fancy.

Good good :marseynotes:

I've never had Bay Bridge. I am not a picky wine person and usually get the house wine or what the restaurant staff recommends when I'm out but I got Oak Leaf Chardonnay once bc people said it was great for $3 and it was ๐Ÿคฎ. Now I stay away from under $5 wines beckoning to me from the end cap

I recently had a 2019 Joel Gott cabernet sauvignon that was notably delicious.

I normally avoid red wines because they make my face turn red, but I'll make an exception for that one.

:#marseylickinglips:

I'm a basic b-word when it comes to white wines and find Barefoot's pinot grigio easily drinkable.

edit: since you're in Texas, Llano Estacado has some really good cheap palatable white wines as well. I can't tolerate moscatos anymore, but they produced my favorite when I did.

sparkling wine as is great as an aperitif to get you nice and hungry before dinner :marseylickinglips:

red: beaujolais from france is a classic pairing for turkey. it's bone dry (low sugar) so might work better for those sensitive to headaches. you can find louis jadot brand everywhere for around $13.

white: sweet wines go great with a lot of thanksgiving foods or for after dinner. gewurztraminer or resiling from germany/austria are :marseychefkiss:

or for non-sweet white: italian pinot grigio

wine pairings all made up tho so it really doesn't matter as long as it tastes good :marseydrunk:

You should be able to find a Gavi for sixteen-ish bucks in the Italian section of any decent wine shop. Brand is not very important, they're all pretty good from my experience: Villa Sparina is my usual. It's a dry mineral white wine that, unlike a California Chardonnay, doesn't taste like licking a log and won't upset any white women's unspecified "sensitivity".

The 2020 vintage Mogen David was exquisite :fancywithwine:

Actually though if you're buying for a non-snobbish crowd just go to Trader Joe's, get the Sonriente Garnacha for a nice medium-bodied red and the Trader Joe's Brand Williamette Pinot Gris. Lately there have been some really solid French roses in their rotating lineup, but I can't name any of them. That Garnacha is probably the best red table wine you can get at its price point.

I like Cabernets a lot. Josh, Coppola, and The Federalist are 3 typical bottles around $15 that are decent. Josh has a Chardonnay for a couple bucks cheaper that's fine. I can't recommend whites because I don't drink enough, but that one doesn't taste bad.
