Fun fact: Cross of Iron was shot in Yugoslavia in the 1970s. Those T-34s were real Yugo army tanks given by the USSR after WW2.

That's a tough call. For the most part I agree with you, it was more anti-groupthink, or even maybe just anti-US in general? But a lot of people consider it to be anti-war, and it's definitely shaded closer to that than Deer Hunter or any of those John Wayne/Audie Murphy flicks.
It's like Apocalypse Now I guess. A story that takes place during a war.
