>Leo has a revelation—a producer can make a lot more money with a flop than a hit by overselling shares in the production, because no one will audit the books of a play presumed to have lost money. For this same reason, no duped investor will be aware of the many others, thus protecting the pair from charges of fraud. Max instantly puts this scheme into action. They will oversell shares on a massive scale and produce a play that will close on opening night, thus avoiding payouts and leaving the duo free to flee to Rio de Janeiro with the profits.
This is a gross over-simplification, but the point still stands
You think that these major productions are an investor scam? Who is investing money into a DC production neighbor?
Oddly enough there is more value/ opportunity in the DC name than you could make off a flop. Marvel has made many billions of dollars. Your explanation just doesn't fit reality.
All these projects are funded by numerous investors, some bigger and more involved than others. One of rhe jobs of the producer is to pool money from investors. The bigger more involved investors are generally in on the scam and dont get bit in the end. Also there's ussually insurance to cover losses to other investors so its the average person (uninvolved in even investing)whose premium goes up that gets screwed in the aggreagte.

Hollywood accounting is part of the methodology used to make money off a flop, this theme is so endemic to Hollyeood that a movie was made about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Producers_(1967_film)

But those are the producers? How are the producers scanning investors if they are paying for it themselves.
