Conspicuously left out Dune. The movie he looks to be ripping off. :#marseythonk:

Regardless Zac Snyder movies are usually pretty fun

All Sci fi has ripped off Dune so much its just expected like how all fantasy ripped off Tolkien.

>I'm a fan of all things Star Wars, but it's still very adolescent in its aesthetic

Sure, but didn't this guy become famous for making zombieshit, then a children's cartoon about sweaty buff Greek guys, then capeshit?

Surely with all his money and success at some point he would have branched out and tried to make a more high-brow movie. Let's take a look at his filmography to see...

Oh.

Edit: To be fair, I didn't notice that he says "What is there for me? That's where I started.", which seems to show that he is self-aware about never having made anything that is not adolescent in its aesthetics, and he wants to try to overcome this. Well, I'm rooting for you Snyder.

I don't care if 300 wasn't accurate, ancient Spartans would have loved the way the movie portrayed them and the Persians, plus it was awesome

It's a fun movie and an actually interesting film-making experiment, but I mean, if there's any movie that defines "adolescent aesthetic"...

He's like a gymbro with an arty streak. The "mature" stuff he wants is stuff like Heavy Metal comics and John Boorman's Excalibur. He's not exactly citing Kubrick or Scorsese as his inspirations, kek.

Yeah, "adult" to the snydercel types just means gratuitous objectified sexual content and violence, never character development or weighty/nuanced themes.

His films are in the most literal sense adolescent in ways (OT) Star Wars transcended.

I could never get into Star Wars and don't really understand the reverance for it even the OT. I find most of Snyder's films boring :marseysleep: but I'm not going to lose any sleep over him dissing star wars.

If you're not a boomer what you can't understand is that Star Wars was really the only thing like that into in 1990s. It's just been ripped off so much since then that it's easy to forget how important it was.

But if we had Star Wars but with titties it would be really grown up and R-rated just like the movies that 18-year olds watch!

Kind of just the nature of our pop culture right now, where people think that The Dark Knight is a serious drama that has important things to say about existence, lol.

Not that I think that capeshit can't say important things about existence, necessarily, but I haven't seen it happen so far.

I think TDK is a bit more interesting than people give it credit for these days but then again you can only do so much within the superhero genre.

Adding blood and s*x too a fundamentally adolescent story does not make it mature. But @TheTroubleWithPibbles do respect the guy for delivering these edgy teenage visions.

Actual fans are not obsessed with her. She's considered an annoying kid character who was eventually redeemed by better writing. But she never quite fit into the timeline, and was ruined with overuse and preferential treatment. She is Dave Filoni's Mary Sue.

OT-ONLY FANS AREN'T WATCHING CURRENT SW AT ALL. THEY'VE MOVED ON. THE CORE OF THE CURRENT FANBASE IS PEOPLE WHO GREW UP IN THE PREQUEL ERA AND ARE CLINGING TOO MUH CHILDHOOD. A LOT OF THEM WOULD SAY THE PREQUELS WERE FLAWED BUT STUFF LIKE THE CLONE WARS CARTOON "FIXED" IT. BUT I'VE SEEN A LOT OF PEOPLE START TOO ADMIT THAT EVEN THE CLONE WARS SHOW IS MOSTLY A BASIC KIDS' CARTOON THAT HAS SOME COOL MOMENTS, AND THEY DON'T WANT TOO WATCH DOZENS OF HOURS OF KIDS' TV TOO UNDERSTAND THE NEWEST NOSTALGIA CASH GRAB.

THE FINAL STAGE, ACCEPTANCE, IS FORGETTING SW AND PUTTING ON 90'S STAR TREK WHILE YOU COOK DINNER. :marseyspock: !TREKKIES

Both Marvel and Star Wars retain an ever-shrinking cadre of funko connoisseurs that will soyface over the current "content," but those are too small too represent the audience that Disney would need too attract too keep these franchises valuable (see also: The Marvels, the current MCU shows, etc).

Probably the baseline for average SW fans who currently engage with the franchise is people who really liked the Mandalorian seasons 1-2. That show brought in a lot of people who were neutral/negative towards the sequels and were mostly checked out during the animated era, or who only watched TCW as kids but wouldn't defend it as high art. People were generally giving the new shows the benefit of the doubt at first, but most were disappointed by Boba Fett and Obi-Wan, and the goodwill is rapidly fading. Probably the average person watching the Mandalorian is not a Clone Wars/Rebels superfan. I've seen a lot of discontent about Ahsoka surviving Rebels because she really should not be around in the OT era, let alone the ST. I've stopped seeing salty fans draw a clear distinction between "Kathleen Kennedy" and "Dave Filoni" Star Wars, instead wanting a new direction altogether.

@TheTroubleWithPibbles admit that this is mostly just based on vibes from talking too people, reading online discussion, and @TheTroubleWithPibbles's own experiences.

The Genndy Tartakovsky (samurai jack guy) Clone Wars cartoon was cool but those were 10(?) minute shorts fleshing out the existing prequel plot rather than creating entirely new ones.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Those were awesome. They were mostly just story-lite "cool people doing cool things" sequences, but that's the best part of prequel-era SW. @TheTroubleWithPibbles is not sure that style could be extended too far because in total they added up too the length of a couple TV movies. The closest you could get would be focusing on anthologies, but Disney wants interchangeable cash cow series that are all part of an inflexible "canon."

Everyone says that about [Christopher Nolan's] Batman Begins. "Batman's dark." I'm like, okay, "No, Batman's cool." He gets to go to a Tibetan monastery and be trained by ninjas. Okay? I want to do that. But he doesn't, like, get r*ped in prison. That could happen in my movie. If you want to talk about dark, that's how that would go.

You don't even need to interview Snyder anymore, you could just use these as a template to make up quotes and he probably wouldn't challenge you
