I've recommended this show a few times in threads when people have asked for really good TV but my comments never got much traction. I'm hoping this does, because this show is a GREAT mix of sci-fi (which tried to remain "hard / grounded" in its execution) and Le Carre spy thriller. It stars JK SIMMONS, fresh off his Oscar win for Whiplash, and is really good. Only lasted two seasons but manages to wrap up the main story kind of like Carnivale (another show you MUST WATCH if you've never heard of it; HBO starring Nick Stahl)

One of the most wonderful things about this show, and I'm avoiding spoilers here, but it is mentioned in the trailer – as the trailer says, there was an experiment during the Cold War that opened up an alternate reality. But they don't go for any kind of special effects or anything – literally, there's this dank, nasty basement looking hallway that you walk through, and at a certain point, it looks like it's mirrored, because it is. The reality shift is seamless. I always appreciated that they went for absolutely no special effects here, no sounds, no visual, just a dank, nasty hallway. I thought it was pretty fricking smart and pretty daring to do in a time when everyone wants visual masturbation.

Yeah, I appreciated that aspect as well. It's sorta similar in the German sci-fi show Dark. They just pass through a weird tunnel, very little SFX until the very end of the show.
I prefer psychological thrillers and little-to-un-explained worldbuilding over exposition so this was right up my alley.

I watched four episodes of Dark but got really bored. I think I guessed the twist but man, that show is a SLOG

Yeah, it's definitely a slow burn series. It's doesn't help that there's a ton of characters and first season is nearly entire setup.
