Great TV Sci-fi / Cold War spy thriller show starring JK Simmons that lasted two seasons (originally a Starz show) // COUNTERPART

I've recommended this show a few times in threads when people have asked for really good TV but my comments never got much traction. I'm hoping this does, because this show is a GREAT mix of sci-fi (which tried to remain "hard / grounded" in its execution) and Le Carre spy thriller. It stars JK SIMMONS, fresh off his Oscar win for Whiplash, and is really good. Only lasted two seasons but manages to wrap up the main story kind of like Carnivale (another show you MUST WATCH if you've never heard of it; HBO starring Nick Stahl)

Loved this show. Too bad it only lasted two seasons.

It deserved better than Starz. :marseysigh:

Real quick, want your opinion on this aspect (sorry for linking to the only other comment in this thread): https://rdrama.net/h/kino/post/242576/great-tv-scifi-cold-war-spy/5867129#context

Did you also appreciate that they made the "traversal" as unremarkable as they did? And then in S2 we see they house "travelers" in cages for processing like at an actual border? Man, if this show came out NOW???

It really did but man, those two seasons were KINO. I don't blame Starz at all- they took a gamble and really put everything they had into it. I am just happy we got it

One of the most wonderful things about this show, and I'm avoiding spoilers here, but it is mentioned in the trailer – as the trailer says, there was an experiment during the Cold War that opened up an alternate reality. But they don't go for any kind of special effects or anything – literally, there's this dank, nasty basement looking hallway that you walk through, and at a certain point, it looks like it's mirrored, because it is. The reality shift is seamless. I always appreciated that they went for absolutely no special effects here, no sounds, no visual, just a dank, nasty hallway. I thought it was pretty fricking smart and pretty daring to do in a time when everyone wants visual masturbation.

Yeah, I appreciated that aspect as well. It's sorta similar in the German sci-fi show Dark. They just pass through a weird tunnel, very little SFX until the very end of the show.

I prefer psychological thrillers and little-to-un-explained worldbuilding over exposition so this was right up my alley.

I watched four episodes of Dark but got really bored. I think I guessed the twist but man, that show is a SLOG

Yeah, it's definitely a slow burn series. It's doesn't help that there's a ton of characters and first season is nearly entire setup.

Hello J.K Rowling, I want to play a game.

The transphobic propaganda you've spewed has tormented the vulnerable, ruined lives, and enabled countless acts of hateful violence. And yet you continue to live in wealth and comfort, and the public can't seem to truly hate you because of the legacy of your writings.

I will now rob you of all the comforts you have used to shield yourself from the repercussions of your hate, and ensure that your devotees and the public at large never have any fond memories of you ever again.

I have stripped you naked and plugged you in with IVs of testosterone. Little by little, the dosage will increase until you suffer a lethal overdose, and till then, you will face the same hormonal dysphoria you so callously dismiss when mocking the struggles of the trans community.

To save yourself, you must forsake the very legacy that has protected you. In front of you are ten holes, for each finger you have. You must insert your fingers to be severed, each one representing the legacy that will be destroyed today. Seven Harry Potter novels, that Casual Vacancy book no one remembers, your crappy Robert Galbraith titles, and finally, Hogwarts Legacy. All their posters shall be burned in full view of the public for each finger you lose, and only when you lose them all can you walk away with your life.

So will you stubbornly cling to your hate, even with the painful demise that awaits you? Or will you renounce your legacy for the chance to live another day? Live or die, Ms Rowling. The choice is yours.
