Weekly What are you watching #37

Watched "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" on Tubi. Classic "Frick yeah bro!" movie. It felt like an evolution of the goofier R-rated fantasy flicks from the 80's, which is a lineage Hollywood basically forgot about after LOTR. I had a big smile the whole time.

As tiring as the "PG-13 bad" circlejerk is, I think this is a prime example of a movie that would be absolutely murdered by a PG-13 cut. The gratuitous violence and sexuality are really necessary to support the jokey writing. It's one big over-the-top adolescent project working in unison. The issue with "millennial writing" is it tries to apply a tone of transgression to a baseline product that is fundamentally bland.
