Let me say a few words about that, though. Last year, when I mentioned seeing my Voyager editor in London, the internet went nuts, throwing up all sorts of theories about how this meant that WINDS OF WINTER was done and a huge announcement was at hand. Uhhhh… sorry guys, but no. That's not how it works. Making contacts… which often turn into friendships… is a huge part of publishing. Most of my communication with my editors and publishers is conducted via emails, phone calls, zooms, and texts (in the old days, we had letters written on paper too)
So calm down, please. When WINDS OF WINTER is done, the word will not trickle out, there WILL be a big announcement… where and when I cannot say.

Yeah honestly I gave up on it a long time so. The books were great and the show was really good up to season 4, but anyone who thinks the series is
anything other than dead in the water is just coping.
There are other great fantasy series out there by authors who actually care about their work. Go read one of those.

Malazan is like the anti-ASOIF. It's a labor of love by a super talented author that's so long and complex that the reason you'll never finish it is purely because there's so much to it that it's like a 5 year long investment to get through the whole thing. I started it 10 years ago and I'm only halfway through (though I've read the first ones a few times trying to give myself context when I pick it up again).
It would also be basically impossible to adapt to TV, so no worries about normies ruining it for you.
It also does dark fantasy better than any other series I've read IMO. Nothing is overdone, but some parts of the series are really fricking grim. The first chapter is actually pretty lit. If you read it and like it, there's a good chance you'll like the series.

I was reading it around the time the TV series first came out, read from the beginning up until the red wedding in a few weeks. After reading that, I distinctly remember thinking "wow, he just killed off all the Starks I'm interested in reading about. This is gay.", closed the book, and never opened it again. Yeah I know sansa, Arya, and Robb are around, and Catelyn comes back as a zombie queen or whatever, but I felt insulted as a reader for even getting invested into what seemed like "the stark story" and having that happen.
I've since sold the books (had the collection of four) and won't pick it up again tbh.
ETA: IIRC robb gets killed and brann is who I'm thinking of who wasn't there and is still alive. It was Robb's death that pissed me off bad enough to never pick it up again.

According to Wikipedia he's married but has no kids. I watched an interview with Regis Philbin and he made a point about what it's like to "hit it big" later in life, which I think applies to Martin. Marin wrote a ton of shit in the 70s and 80s that went nowhere - he's written a total of 67 books starting back in the early 70s and the majority of them are just pulp and forgotten.
I know in the 80s and early 90s he did some writing for film and TV, pitched a bunch of shows and films that went nowhere.
Then GOT comes and even still he and D&D had to fight to get it made, they were turned down by AMC and Showtime and a bunch of others until they got a break from HBO and then - SHIT BLOWS UP. The dude at this point in time is old as frick but suddenly million dollar cheques are coming in, a whole life time of digging finally struck oil.
So anyway, back to Regis, he said that when you get old it's impossible to stop working when you get successful despite being old as frick - it's like you're making up for the past, earning money retroactively that you wanted to be earning when you were beating your butt on the streets way back when nobody cared about you.... if you know every day you can wake up and work and make 100K that day how do you not do it?

@coned means is that the lords of Westeros will never accept a cripple as a King for 2 reasons.
1. they're prejudiced and cripples are a sign of weakness. One of the main reasons Tywin hates Tyrion is because he's a dwarf which makes House Lannister look weak and bad in front of the rest, that's why he refused to acknowledge Tyrion as the heir of Casterly Rock. Others like Randyll Tarly are willing to murder their own children for not fitting their standards.
2. Bran can't father children, that makes him a dead end. Ambitious lords want their grandchildren sitting on the Iron Throne and the whole "elective monarchy" they came up at the show is a recipe for disaster. I guess Bran's siblings could be made his heirs.

Fans would have been fine with the ending if the show runners had found a non r-slurred way to get to the ending. Seasons 7-8 of GOT felt like a cliffnotes version of the story compared to the rest of the series. I really doubt GRRM wrote that Bran would become king because Tyrion gave a heartfelt speech about Bran having the best story, oh and Sam invents democracy off the cuff but gets laughed at.

he's been backed in to a corner and doesn't know how to get out. the way the show ended was his story. he saw the reaction to it and knows he can not release that story. he's been desperately trying to rewrite everything but has no idea how to do it or where to go since the ending he's had in his head for decades was terrible.

The show ended in 2019, 8 years after ADWD was published. GRRM got stuck long before the show ended as AFFC and ADWD kept introducing new POVs and locations, during that time he promoted the show, wrote Fire and Blood and screenplays for the show. His most productive years so far were the pandemic years, that's when he gave a bunch of updates until 2022 when he said he had 1100-1200 manuscript pages done, it was the first time he gave an update on written pages in almost a decade. And after that nothing.
I think TWOW will be published in some way as too much of the book exists but book 7 is never coming outside maybe some outline notes.

There was a lot to cringe at show Daenerys (her girlboss speeches for instance), but chuds angry at her for crucifying the poor slave masterinos (the Ghiscari are a super degenerate and sadistic slave society) are cute twinks. She killed 163 of them but I'm convinced based Stannis would have burned them all.
The destruction of King's Landing was a cool scene even if it made no sense plot wise due to lack of build up.
