Plenty of families get their kids a young animal (typically a kitten or puppy, but it happens with rabbits too) for Christmas, and then three months into the next year it's running wild because they did zero training, the kids have stopped taking care of it because they only want the fun part of owning a pet and scooping litter is icky and walkies are boring, and it's costing a lot more in food and supplies than they realised, so the parents get rid of it.

Real. My great grandmother was a crazy cat lady and they had 14 cats in their house at the peak. My uncles couldn't stand them and once took 2 in a sack and dropped them off on the other side of a canal around 4 or 5km away. They got back home the next day.
