Police in Mexico have conducted a raid on an extremist Jewish sect known for advocating child marriage, arresting two men and reuniting a young boy with his father who left the cult.
Multiple children were rescued, and one, age three, was reunited with his father Yisrael Amir, a former Lev Tahor member who has been trying to gain custody since disavowing the sect several years ago.
'I now look forward to building my new life as a young father in Israel.
Shlomo Helbrans (pictured left in 1992) founded Lev Tahor in Israel, having been deported from the US for kidnapping a 13-year-old boy. He later gained refugee status in Canada, claiming he was being persecuted by the Israeli government for his anti-Zionist teachings
Nachman Helbrans, the son of the group's founder, was convicted of kidnapping and child sexual exploitation crimes last year Among those taken into custody in the raid were Israelis with dual citizenships including Canada, the US and Guatemala, Israel's foreign ministry said.
Federal police and agents of the attorney general's office carried out the raid following an investigation by the Special Prosecutor for Organized Crime (FEMDO).

MOSCOW, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Russia said on Thursday it was studying the possibility of a face-to-face meeting between Russian and U.S. negotiators on a landmark nuclear arms control treaty.
In a briefing in Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russia was open to reviving inspections under the New START treaty and considering the possibility of in-person meetings of a joint commission of representatives from the United States and Russia.
Physical inspections under the treaty have been suspended since 2020, initially as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
"The topic of resuming them is being considered," Zakharova said on Thursday. "The possibilities for holding a face-to-face session of the bilateral advisory commission are being studied."
The treaty sets limits on the number of nuclear arms each side can have deployed, and outlines the terms for verification and inspection of each other's nuclear arsenals.
Moscow said in August it was considering a new meeting of the commission, as well as a possible resumption of negotiations to extend the treaty, one of the few major diplomatic agreements that remain in place between Moscow and Washington as relations hit rock-bottom over the conflict in Ukraine.

Justice Samuel Alito says criticism of the Supreme Court is going too far.
But saying or implying that the court is becoming an illegitimate institution or questioning our integrity crosses an important line,” he said.
“I think judges create legitimacy problems for themselves – undermine their legitimacy – when they don’t act so much like courts and when they don’t do things that are recognizably law,” she said in New York earlier this month.
Roberts had a different view of the court’s legitimacy.
In a speech in Colorado, he said that while all of the court’s opinions are open to criticism, he pointedly noted that “simply because people disagree with opinions is not a basis for questioning the legitimacy of the court.”
The justices will also come together Friday morning – along with President Joe Biden – for the investiture of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

HELSINKI, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Finland said on Thursday it would close its border to Russian tourists at midnight, shutting off the last remaining direct land route to the European Union for them as thousands of Russians seek to avoid conscription into the war in Ukraine.
"The entry of Russian citizens in tourist purposes into Finland endangers Finland's international relations," Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto told a news conference, explaining that the decision had followed talks with Ukraine and neighbours.

In perhaps one of the more deplorable moves from a man accused of abusing and threatening to kill his exes, Herschel Walker, Georgia’s Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, on Tuesday said trans kids won’t get into heaven. “
Advertisement It’s a stance that’s in pretty stark contrast with his opponent, Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock, who is a literal preacher. “
As a pastor I believe in the dignity of all human beings.
And as a parent I love my children and I’m sure other people love their children and they want to make sure their children are safe from hatred,” Warnock said in explaining his opposition to policies that ban youth gender-affirming care or force trans kids out of sports. “
I will remain focused on all of our young people and at the same time, trying to create opportunities.”

About the family:
A Southern California man suspected of killing his estranged wife and abducting their 15-year-old daughter had been living with the teenager out of his pickup truck and hotels for weeks before the violence, authorities said Wednesday.
Anthony Graziano had moved out of the family’s home a month or two before the killing, as the couple went through a divorce, Fontana Sgt. Christian Surgent told The Associated Press. Savannah Graziano left with her father, while her younger brother stayed with their mother.
About the murder before the car chase:
On Monday, witnesses saw Martinez walking in Fontana when Graziano picked her up in his truck. “And immediately that’s when they started arguing and yelling and domestic violence was occurring,” he said.
Martinez got out of the truck and Graziano opened fire with a handgun, striking her multiple times, Surgent said. Graziano fled and drove to get Savannah, who likely was wherever they had been staying that day, Surgent said.
Police issued an Amber Alert after Martinez’s killing, saying Savannah Graziano had been abducted by her father. Now, detectives are trying to determine whether or not she was forced into leaving Fontana.
About the car chase and shoot-out:
The next day, a 911 caller reported seeing the suspect’s Nissan Frontier around Barstow, nearly 70 miles north of Fontana.
Law enforcement located the pickup truck and chased it on the highway to Hesperia. Throughout the pursuit, Graziano was “constantly shooting back at the deputies” with a rifle through the truck’s rear window, County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said during a news conference.
Dicus said there were “some indications” Savannah was shooting at deputies during the chase but didn’t provide any details.
A firefight in Hesperia ensued when the truck went off-road and somehow became disabled, with dozens of bullets flying. The girl, wearing a tactical helmet and vest, got out and ran toward deputies amid a hail of gunfire, police said. Her father was found in the driver’s seat and pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have said the only weapon retrieved at the scene was a rifle in the truck, where Anthony Graziano died. There is police video of the shootout that authorities are reviewing.

Italy originally expected to achieve independence from Russian gas by spring 2025, but it must expand its regasification capacity to ensure a repeat of this winter’s results, the people said.

US President Joe Biden appeared Wednesday to believe that a congresswoman, whose death he had marked with a statement in August, was in the audience of a Washington event on food that she had helped launch.
The White House responded to a flurry of media inquiries about the odd incident by saying the president simply had the congresswoman on his mind.
“Jackie, are you here? Where’s Jackie?” Biden called into the crowd, referring to the late Republican congresswoman Jackie Walorski, who was part of the bipartisan group behind the White House health conference on food and diet.
“I think she was going to be here,” Biden said.
In fact, Walorski died in a car accident in August and Biden, the oldest president in history at 79 years old, issued a statement at the time saying he was “shocked and saddened.”

Brazil remains tense in advance of October 2 vote, as polls show former left-wing leader ahead of incumbent Jair Bolsonaro.
He keeps casting suspicion over the electoral court.
The Genial/Quaest poll on Wednesday found that negative views of Bolsonaro’s government edged up to 42 percent from 39 percent last week, while the percentage of those who see the government in a positive light remained flat at 31 percent.
On Saturday, a 34-year-old man died after being stabbed in Rio do Sul, a city of 72,000 residents.
Earlier in the campaign, a Bolsonaro backer killed a local official of Lula’s Workers’ Party in the city of Foz de Iguacu and there have been less serious clashes between backers of both candidates.
Casaroes at Fundacao Getulo Vargas said on Wednesday that if opinion polls hold true and Lula wins the presidency, he will have “a big challenge, which is to heal the wounds of the country”.
