New figures have revealed that the price of charging an electric car using a rapid public charger has risen by more than 42% in just four months, caused by the rising wholesale costs of gas and electricity.
It now costs £32.41 on average to charge a 64kWh family car such as the Kia e-Niro Long Range to 80% from empty via a public rapid charger, up £9.60 (£22.81) from May and £13.60 (£18.81) from the same time last year.
This is due to the average cost to charge per kilowatt hour, which is now 63.29p, up from 44.55p in May and 36.74p in September last year, the RAC has revealed.
The rising cost has been mirrored at ultra-rapid charging points (100kW-plus), which now charge an average of 63.94p per kilowatt hour, up from 50.97p in May and 34.21p in September last year. This means that charging a 64kWh family car to 80% costs £32.74, up £6.64 (£26.10) from May.
Charging firms have expressed concerns over the rise – caused in part by the UK’s decision to look at other sources for its gas and oil following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – arguing that they can no longer shield consumers from the price rises.
Instavolt has argued that the rise is due to the 20% VAT imposed by the government on public charging, compared with the 5% on home charging, adding that it could offer prices as low as 58p per kilowatt hour if home charging VAT rates were matched.
“We reiterate our commitment that if the public charging rate is reduced, the benefit will be passed back to consumers immediately,” said a spokesman.
This point is supported by Osprey CEO Ian Johnston, who previously told Autocar: “There is a cap that is protecting consumers at home, but there is no such cap for private businesses and we are buying energy at unseen levels at the moment.”
“We are trying to protect customers where we can but clearly we can’t run the network at a loss.”
However, one firm, Ionity, confirmed that despite the rising costs, it won’t be making any price rises yet and “currently have no future increases planned”.
Another worry from the RAC is that the price hike could put off potential buyers, hindering the government’s plan to ban the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars by 2030.
But Johnston disagrees, previously telling Autocar: “I think for the people who are currently making the decision to switch, the list of reasons to move to an EV are long and proven, and it is still – in many cases – cheaper than driving petrol or diesel [vehicles].

Senior House Democrats are poised to introduce long-promised legislation to restrict stock ownership and trading by members of Congress, senior government officials and Supreme Court justices.
The bill would apply to the spouses and dependent children of those officials, according to an outline sent to lawmaker offices last week by House Administration Chair Zoe Lofgren. The restrictions also cover “commodities, futures, cryptocurrency, and other similar investments,” according to the outline.
The legislation would require public officials to either divest current holdings or put them in a blind trust. Investments in mutual funds or other widely held investment funds and government bonds would be allowed.
The bill may be released as soon as Monday, according to a person familiar with the matter. It hasn’t been scheduled for a vote, though House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer has said it’s possible it could come to the floor this week in the middle of an already jam-packed schedule before lawmakers go on break ahead of the November midterm election.
While conservative Republicans and progressive Democrats alike have been clamoring for restrictions on stock trades by members of Congress to avoid conflicts of interest, legislation has been hung up by questions about how broad to make the ban and whether to include family members. A group of senators is working on their own version of the legislation and there’s little chance of Congress taking any final action before the midterms.
“I believe that a meaningful and effective plan to combat financial conflicts of interest could help restore the public’s faith and trust that our public servants act in the public interest,” Lofgren, a California Democrat, wrote in the notice to lawmakers, which was obtained by Bloomberg.
The current law doesn’t prohibit lawmakers from owning or trading individual securities, but it bans members of Congress from using nonpublic information available to them for personal benefit. It requires any transaction be disclosed within 45 days.
A New York Times analysis of disclosure forms published earlier this month found that from 2019 to 2021 almost 100 senators or representatives reported that they or an immediate family member traded a stock or other financial assets that had some overlap with issues before congressional committees on which they served.
Lofgren’s framework also would tighten disclosure requirements and increase penalties for violations.
One of the key points of debate has been whether to include family members in any ban on trading. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, made his fortune in real estate and venture capital and frequently draws attention for his stock trades. Pelosi in February gave her support to banning lawmakers from trading equities, a reversal of her earlier stance on the subject.
Another potential point of contention is applying the requirements to the Supreme Court. The Congressional Research Service in an April report said that Congress imposing a code of conduct on the judiciary would “raise an array of legal questions,” including whether it would violate the constitutional separation of powers.
Justices and lower court judges already file annual financial disclosures and are barred from participating in cases where there’s a direct conflict of interest. Despite that, the CRS report says that the Supreme Court has never directly addressed “whether Congress may subject Supreme Court Justices to financial reporting requirements or limitations upon the receipt of gifts.”
Will this legislation pass?

On Friday, Sept. 16, Yareni Rios-Gonzalez was taken into custody by an officer from the Platteville Police Department on suspicion of felony menacing, possibly an act of road rage in Fort Lupton, Colorado, involving a gun. Once he detained her, he placed the young woman in the back of his cruiser. [Note: not in this article, they never actually found a gun]
The cop left the 20-year-old in his squad car, which was parked on the train track crossing near U.S. 85 and County Road 38, north of Platteville, near Denver, to join Fort Lupton officers to search the woman’s vehicle that she parked a few feet away from the tracks, NBC News reports. While the police officer and two other cops from the Fort Lupton Police department searched Rios-Gonzalez’s truck, a train traveling northbound struck the patrol car with the suspect in it, leaving the Greely, Colorado, resident in serious condition.
A video of the incident has been released. It shows one officer shouting at another, “move your car” before the other cop looks at the car, turns to look at the train, and then walks off the tracks just before the locomotive smashes into the police cruiser.
The TSA agent sustained nine broken ribs, a fractured sternum, a broken arm, and many other injuries to her head, back, and legs. Though her injuries are severe, a report on Sunday, Sept. 18, said she was expected to live.
The young woman has now secured an attorney, who said his client was “frantically” trying to escape the vehicle. “She was frantically trying to get out,” personal injury lawyer Paul Wilkinson told 9NEWS in an interview. “Of course, the doors were locked.” He continued, “She’s definitely upset about what happened. She doesn’t understand why she was left in the car. She was yelling to get their attention and could see the train coming.”
Law and Crime reports that Platteville Police Chief Carl Dwyer did not reveal the officer’s name or any additional information regarding the collision, but shared he was placed on paid leave. “The Town of Platteville continues to work cooperatively with CBI and CSP during their investigation regarding this incident,” he shared with FOX 31.
911 calls help piece together what lead to Rios-Gonzalez being placed in the patrol. The person who initiated the call claimed a woman in a silver Toyota Tundra truck “pulled a gun” on the caller during a tailgating event. Three agencies (FLPD, Weld County’s Sheriff Officer, and PPD) were looking for the silver truck, with the latter locating a vehicle that fit the description first. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said in a statement, “The driver of the vehicle pulled to a stop just past the railroad tracks, with the patrol officer behind the car on the tracks.”
It further read, “Two Ft. Lupton officers arrived on the scene and the team conducted a high-risk traffic stop and detained a lone female occupant (age 20, Greeley) placing her in the back of the Platteville patrol car detained on suspicion of felony menacing.” “While the officers cleared the suspect vehicle as part of the investigation, a train traveling northbound struck the PPD patrol car,” it continued.
The CBI also stated the officers performed life-saving measures on Rios-Gonzales after the crash, before she was taken to the hospital.
Chatter captured on the radio recording, secured by KUSA, suggests the officers on the scene held Rios-Gonzalez “at gunpoint.” But that was not revealed in the CBI’s report. The radio chatter also captures the frantic moments after the accident.
One officer from Ft. Lupton says, “Dispatch, Lupton 346: patrol car was just hit by a train.”
“Dispatch, Lupton 346: get medical emergent [sic],” the cop continued. “The suspect was in the vehicle that was hit by the train.”
“Copy,” the dispatcher replied.
The officer whose car was struck said, “Just advising … we can’t get the doors open on the unit, and the female passenger is inside my unit.”
A bifurcated approach will be taken during the investigations of this incident. The CBI has launched an investigation into Rios-Gonzalez. The Fort Lupton Police Department is investigating the initial 911 call that prompted the search for the truck. Lastly, the Colorado State Patrol is looking into the “serious-injury traffic accident” caused by the train ramming into the car. Ed Obayashi, a California sheriff deputy, who specializes as a police tactics expert said he could not “fathom” why the officer would park his patrol vehicle on the tracks and believed the negligence opens the department up to a civil lawsuit.
“I can’t fathom why he would leave his vehicle on the tracks with the subject inside. Why didn’t you move the vehicle off the tracks? That’s going to be the biggest question,” he said. “Those who are in your custody,” the expert continued. “You’ve detained them or they’re in the back of your patrol car, you have a duty of care towards that subject,” the expert posited. “In other words, since you have assumed control, physical control, over them and their movements, you are by definition responsible to protect them in any situation.”

Chin had been feeling cautious even before Lee was murdered. He told me a story about how, in late January, he had encountered an unhoused man who he said was defacing a mural outside his building. “I was chasing him off. He turns around, and he was like, ‘Frick you, chink.’ And then pulls out a can of pepper spray and sprays me right in the eyes,” he said. “That shit burned — I was just a roaring man. He seemed terrified, like, Oh God, it’s not working. At that point, I chased him down in the subway and then shot him in the back of the neck with a taser.”
I was taken aback. “Wait, so do you carry a taser around with you?” I said.
“Oh yeah. Absolutely,” said Chin. “I actually recommend you carry one as well.” The man fell down the stairs when Chin tased him before running off. According to Chin, there happened to be a couple of NYPD officers in the station: “They said they couldn’t find him. He escaped into the subway.”
Chin characterized this incident — the man calling him a chink and hitting him with the pepper spray — as a hate crime. “Everyone’s terrified out of their minds now because we’re seeing stuff like this,” he said. “I think the collective sense is that criminals are being protected more than citizens at the moment.” Lee’s murder served to galvanize that conviction

At least 4.4 million people have received an updated Covid booster since the start of the month, according to data released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
That number represents around 1.5% of people currently eligible to receive the shots in the U.S. The data does not include people who received updated Pfizer-BioNTech boosters in Idaho and Texas, the CDC said, so it is likely an underestimate.
The bivalent shots target both the original coronavirus strain and the currently circulating omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5.
That's nearly triple the number from the start of the month.
Nearly 80% of the U.S. population has received at least one shot of a primary Covid vaccine, and nearly 68% is considered fully vaccinated by the CDC, meaning they've gotten either one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or two shots of Pfizer's, Moderna's or Novavax's, which was authorized in July.

Fight crime and forget 'diversity and inclusion' schemes, Suella Braverman tells police
In first major statement since taking up the post, Home Secretary says police need to stop wasting time on ‘symbolic gestures’
The Home Secretary has told police chiefs that the public expect officers to visit the scene of every burglary in a drive to get back to basics.
In her first major statement since taking up the post, Suella Braverman said police needed to stop wasting time on “symbolic gestures” and initiatives on diversity and instead focus on “common sense policing”.
In a letter to all 43 chief constables and police commissioners in England and Wales, she said she had been “dismayed by the perceived deterioration of public confidence” in police in the past few years following “too many” high-profile incidents, such as the murder of Sarah Everard, that had “shattered public trust” in communities across the UK.
She said there not only had to be a change in culture and standards but also a drive to bring down neighbourhood crime and anti-social behaviour.
Ms Braverman made it clear that this meant a big improvement in the charging rates not only for r*pe and sexual offences but also for neighbourhood crimes such as burglary.
Fewer than seven percent of domestic burglaries end in the offender being charged, while for theft it is four per cent and only one per cent for car theft.
“It is absolutely vital that trust is restored, and to address this we must have visible and responsive policing,” she wrote. “It must deliver the public’s priorities, and it must treat victims with the respect they deserve.
“The public have a right to expect that the police get the basics right: driving down anti-social behaviour and neighbourhood crime, which can so easily rip through our communities. To put it simply, the public want to know that an officer will visit them after a crime such as burglary.
“They want to feel safe in their cities, towns and villages. This is not just about doing your day job well – it is also about victims needing to feel supported and not ignored.
“Unfortunately, there is a perception that the police have had to spend too much time on symbolic gestures, than actually fighting criminals. This must change. Initiatives on diversity and inclusion should not take precedence over common sense policing.”
Ms Braverman, a former attorney general who took over from Priti Patel as Home Secretary, reaffirmed Liz Truss’s demand for police to cut homicide, serious violence and neighbourhood crime by 20 per cent.
While overall crime had fallen over the last decade, she said there needed to be a “renewed focus” on tackling neighbourhood crime and antisocial behaviour. “Drugs, vehicle theft, vandalism and graffiti are not being treated seriously enough,” she added.
Ms Braverman said she was “deeply concerned” by the failure to convert more offences under investigation into charges and subsequent prosecutions.
“I want to investigate how we can improve charge rates which have dropped for many crimes, but none more so than for r*pe and sexual offences against women and children,” she said.
Charging rates for crimes such as burglary and theft have halved in six years. This summer, The Telegraph revealed that police have failed to solve a single burglary in neighbourhoods covering nearly half the country over the past three years.
Charges rates for r*pe are even lower, having fallen to just one in 70 offences being solved. Ms Braverman urged more forces to take up Operation Soteria, under which officers focus on investigating r*pe suspects’ patterns of behaviour rather than testing the victim’s credibility. “We need more police referrals and more CPS charges,” she said.
