r/climatechange discusses mitigation tech and more doomerism :marseyplanet: :marseyburn:

/r/climatechange continues to attract r-slurs from /r/collapse which is sad because I don't think there's any serious sub to discuss climate change and it's effects on a rational way. The problem is not that climate change is not problem, a 2.5-3C (the scenario we're currently heading) rise above pre industrial levels until 2100 will be dreadful as impacts in agriculture will cause food insecurity in many countries.

The problem is collapsecels taking the most over the top non-scientific claims and presenting them as truth

https://old.reddit.com/r/climatechange/comments/1bl1ore/do_you_think_that_when_severe_climate_change/

I think quality of life is going to crash over the next 100 years and long term survival of the human race is 50/50.

>Uhm, end of the century is only 76 years away. What populations do you think will be less in that time? Reducing the population of Gaza by genocide has produced worldwide political effects which will take probably 76 years to play out. You will need the equivalent of Gaza happening world wide for 6 months to reduce world population by 5%. I don't think you will have a single entity recognisable as society that will survive that carnage. Certainly no worldwide cooperation between genocidal warlords will be towards carbon mitigation.

Some :#marseyattentionseeker: :marseyflagpalestinegenocide#:

Some say that the warming in the pipeline is enough to send humanity off the proverbial cliff even if we stop all emissions tomorrow. And I'm talking full blown extinction. Frankly, seeing as how it's much easier to stick a wrench in a motor and blow it all apart than it is to build the motor, I think that's absolutely the case. We've stuck a wrench in the carbon cycle and there's no unsticking except MAYBE with miracle level tech like a room temp superconductor. Really want to be proven wrong.

>In terms of raw energy usage growth, if we continue as we have (human or AI & Bots, or both), by 2190s Antarctic ice fields will have all melted. 1000 years from now we will be 18 degrees Celsius warmer. 2000 years from now Earth will become Venus 2.0

Now this guy is talking about runaway greenhouse effect https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runaway_greenhouse_effect

Which no respectable climate scientist claims will happen even in worst case scenarios.

I would not be shocked if by 2030 we're looking into the abyss, so to speak. Climate wise, the 20s may be the last “good” decade for our species.

Some bonus

https://old.reddit.com/r/climatechange/comments/1bjv3lq/rising_ocean_temperature/

I'm more concerned with rising ocean temperatures and the effect that would have on the primary source of oxygen. Phytoplankton, what impact will that have because if they go thats it, everything goes. We can exist without sea life, people will miss seafood food but it wouldn't be the end. Lack of oxygen, definitely the end.

Again with the “Phytoplankton is going extinct! We'll suffocate!”, something doubtful even taking ocean acidification in account. https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn28391-oceans-hidden-green-plankton-revealed-by-fixing-glitch-in-model/

https://www.pbs.org/wnet/peril-and-promise/2022/07/atlantic-oceans-plankton/

Even if that marine doomsday scenario happened plants would still produce oxygen, and even if all photosynthesis magically stoped it would take millions of years for oxygen to vanish from our atmosphere, that's the type of ridiculous scenario they take as truth along with the “we'll turn into Venus”.

"Climate science" is just taking the temperature change from the last 3 years and using it to cause inaccurate predictions such as:

  • Global desertification (alla Mad max)/global iceage (alla Snowpiercer) no inbetween

  • Global famine, pestilence, armageddon

  • Total societal collapse, extinction of all life on Earth

Obviously if the temperature average raises 1degree each year for the next 75 years we are doomed. It's all human's fault. So we need to:

  • Stop using fossil fuels globally.

  • Limiting our electricity usage to 1kW a week. ASAP.

  • Cannibalize each other to save resources. Yt people first of course.

Start arguing with him that by reducing the performance, it takes the computer longer to perform a task and so it ends up using more energy in the end

One thing to understand is that technically :marseynerd2: we're in an ice age. See, an ice age happens when there's a continent covering at least one of the poles, which causes it to be covered in ice :marseyfrozen: and reflect sunlight, making the Earth cooler. Antarctica exists, so we're in an ice age.

In that context, the world is looking pretty warm for being in a continent-on-the-pole period. During the dinosaur period, there was no continent on either pole, so it was warmer everywhere. But continents move slowly and releasing 5000000000000 tons of carbon dioxide in a century causes changes to happen much faster, which is unnatural. Basically all of human evolution :marseybrasileiro: occurred during the present ice age (the "Quaternary Glaciation") so we would be in an environment we don't belong in without it.

by the way the Sun also flips it's magnetic poles once every 11 or so years on average. And a complete cycle of around 22 years consists of Solar HIGHS and MINS. "Climate researchers" claim this doesn't influence the weather meanwhile a solar high or minimum is literally the difference between heavy solar radiation and the minimum amount. of course it affects the frickin weather.

The Earth was ice free 50 million years ago. The problem is not warming per se but rather the speed of the warming, the CO2 we pumped in the atmosphere has done in 150 years what nature takes over a millennium, it's simply not enough time to adapt which means species of animals going extinct, ecosystems disappearing and human migration in zones suffering from food insecurity, expect internal migration before international, it also increases the number of extreme weather events (stronger hurricanes, higher frequency of droughts and floods in different parts of the world, etc) and rising sea level costing hundreds of billions of dollars in damages. The northern hemisphere is ironically warming up much faster than the Southern Hemisphere but considering you're Canadian, that's probably one of the few countries which could benefit from the warming.

Because commies hijacked the environmental movement blaming climate change solely on capitalism instead of human activity, nationalizing industries wouldn't reduce carbon footprint but the average climate internet “activist” is an r-slur with zero financial literacy, they believe the whole “le 100 companies cause climate change” meme which makes it seem like they're simply pumping CO2 in the atmosphere for the lols. They also use climate change to convince normies to adopt their awful economic policies which are unrelated to reducing CO2 emissions. And then there's the degrowth idiots who don't seem to understand “degrowth” would result in a collapse of standards of living and possibly dozens of millions of deaths.

What solutions are communism? The primary solution is a carbon tax, which is the most capitalist solution imaginable. If you think that isn't good enough, then you believe that capitalist markets will suddenly start internalizing externalities on their own. If large parts of Africa become inhospitable, even if this is offset with thawing in Canada/Norway/Russia, do any of them want to take in a billion Africans?
