Just speculating, but maybe the back-to-back wars created the gender gap? Selective Service ("the draft") was re-implemented during WW2 and ended in the early 70s. Mental health wasn't much of a focus, but especially for men. So those who did make it back had issues and either roped, or drank/drugged themselves into early graves?
