Looks like afforable and healthy housing, dense enough to be serviced by public transportation. Could use a new coat of paint and some additional facade elements like shading and such. But overall, I love it.

I grew up in a 5 story Khrushchevka. It needed better insulation, but the actual urban planning was brilliant. Huge play area for children up front, close to stores and public transportation. Lots of benches and green areas. Beat the pants off any shitty American suburb with no sidewalks, where you could get run down by an SUV without even being aware of it.

Meh. The apartments in the photo appear to have balconies and wooded courtyard areas between buildings. There are millions of people in this world who would love to live in a clean apartment with heat and running water; apartments like these would be like paradise for them. If you think this is urban heck, you ain't seen nothing!
Fine, but it doesn't change the fact those buildings look hideous and probably need maintenance, they were build with pre-fabs back in the 1960s and have problems with insulation.

The launch of Polaris Dawn is scheduled for tomorrow, August 28th. The launch window will open at 3:38am EDT and go up to around 7am. The orbital inclination will be of 51.6 degrees, same as the ISS.
The crew members are
Commander: Jared Isaacman
Pilot: Scott Poteet
Mission Specialist 1: Sarah Gillis
Mission Specialist 2: Anna Menon
Both Gillis and Menon work for SpaceX.
This mission is privately founded by Isaacman and possibly SpaceX as well. It was first announced in 2022 and will include a spacewalk testing the experimental EVA suits made by SpaceX.
Upon launch the crew Dragon Resilience will be placed on an elliptical 190x1200km orbit, after a series of checks Resilience will rise to an apogee of 1,400 km, the highest ever for a non-lunar mission and surpassing the previous apogee record held by Gemini 11 (1,368 km).
On day 2 they will go lower into an 190x750km orbit in preparation for the EVA. On day 3 the cabin will be depressurized, after the hatch is opened both Isaacman and Gillis will leave the vehicle while connected by ropes while Menon and Poteet remain inside the cabin while also being exposed to the vacuum. On day 4 they will test Starlink communications. Re-entry preparations will take place on day 5.

Some pics and basic info about the Belo Monte hydropower plant.
Located near the town of Altamira in the state of Pará (in the mist of the Amazon forest) it was build on the Xingu river between 2011 and 2016.
The river was transposed and two dams were build. Belo Monte which is the hydropower plant, 88 meters tall and with its 18 Francis turbines it has an installed capacity of 11,233 MW. This makes it the largest 100% Brazilian dam (Itaipú, the largest and number 1 by energy production is owned 50% by Brazil and 50% by Paraguay).
49% of Belo Monte belongs to Eletrobras, the rest to other pension funds and private investors, the company organized to run it is called "Norte Energia".
The second dam is the "vertedouro" located at the Pimantel site.
It's a water dam with a transposing channel connected to take water from its reservoir to Belo Monte. The Pimantel dam has no turbines, it only has a water discharge.
The maximum discharge capacity for Pimantel is 63,000 m^3/s. While the discharge that goes through the turbines in Belo Monte is of 775 m^3/s for each turbine.

In total over 3 million cubic meters of concrete and 160k metric tons of steel were used during the construction. Most of the cement was provided by Itambé and Votorantim.
The dam attracted a lot of criticism by environmental groups and indigenous activists like the Cacique Raoni
But leftist Presidents Lula and Dilma were the ones to approve the project.
At least Lula is good virtue signaling about environmentalism so annoying euros can leave us alone.
The construction of this dam is extremely dramatic as the construction site became a crime infested shithole (is in the middle of the rainforest and criminals offered services from drugs to prostitution to the workers). But that's another story. The dam flooded an area of 478 sq kilometers.

Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and built between 1963-1971 it is officially known as "Central Institute of Science". The Big Worm has a total length of 696 meters, it was made of prefabricated reinforced concrete.
In that building there are 7 institutes and 3 faculties which are part of the University of Brasilia.

Pic on the post is from the Admiral Álvaro Alberto Nuclear Power Plant, located in Angra dos Reis, state of Rio de Janeiro.
It is composed of 3 reactors (Angra 1, Angra 2 and Angra 3) of which only 2 are operational and the third in "construction".
Angra 1 is a pressurized water reactor (PWR) designed by Westinghouse under an agreement with the Brazilian government, construction began in 1972 and it was opened in 1982, it has the capacity for 657 MW. However in 1974 after the sexy Indian dudes first tested their nukes, the US government decided to cut their nuclear agreement with Brazil as the yanks thought the Military Regime would eventually develop nukes. So President Ernesto Geisel looked elsewhere and signed a deal with West Germany for the construction of a second reactor, Angra 2. The drama involving Angra 3 actually deserves a @kaamrev style effortpost.
Agra 2 began operations in 2001, it was designed by Siemens and has an installed capacity of 1350MW.
Angra 3 construction began in 1984 but it was paralyzed in 1986. Construction resumed in 2010 and stopped again in 2015 after leaks of the Lava Jato operation showed contractors bribing politicians and over-spending to increase profit margins. The reactor is 70% completed and now the government intends to finish it this decade
The other two nuclear power plants in South America are located in Argentina.

Built in the 1970s, it consists of 2 reactors, Atucha I and Atucha II (362 and 745 MW respectively). Both of them are Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR).
The second one is the Embalse Nuclear Power Plant, a single reactor plant, also a PHWR, 635 MW. Located in the Córdoba province. Construction started in 1974 and began operations in 1983.

Tuesday will mark the launch of the first Polaris mission, commanded by Billionaire Jared Isaacman, who was also the commander of the Inspiration4 mission back in 2021.
Joining him are former USAF Lieutenant Colonel Scott Poteet (mission pilot), SpaceX Sarah Gillis (mission specialist 1) and SpaceX Anna Menon (mission specialist 2).
On day one they will enter an ecliptic 190x1400 km orbit, the highest apogee ever for a non-lunar mission surpassing Gemini 11.
On day 3 they will reduce the apogee at 700km and perform a spacewalk. The Dragon cabin will fully depressurize and they will test SpaceX experimental EVA suits. On day 4 they will test starlink coms and on day 5 they will make their preparations to return to Earth.

New Glenn is 98m tall and has 7m of diameter. It can carry up to 45 metric tons to LEO on reusable configuration.
Blue Origin will attempt retro-propulsive landing on the first flight.

Reminder that Blue Origin is building and testing their own Lunar Lander, the Blue Moon, and with New Glenn entering service it's becoming likelier they could beat SpaceX by being in service earlier than the Starship HLS (mostly due to Starship's complexity).
