Man, my buddy used to own an apartment building and rented to a lot of people on government assistance. The stories he told me are wild. I'm actually convinced that everyone on these programs are just too lazy and entitled to get a fricking job. There's no such thing as down on your luck, just fat, lazy, and stupid.

Lots of the same shit you hear all the time. They were all the kind of people that have chronically bad "luck", which is actually just them being lazy, stupid, and entitled. Diabetes keeps them from working, but all they eat is McDonalds :marseychonker2:, etc. He actually preferred to have tenants on disability to low income people with actual jobs though, because I guess he got rent directly out of the payments and didn't have to worry about them not paying (which is a giga black pill for wagies lmao :marseywagie:).

Anyway, lots of minor stuff, like one tenant who swore up and down he wasn't smoking weed in the apartment with bloodshot eyes and a smoking bong sitting on the coffee table :marseybowl:. Overall, they were mostly just scamming the government but it was good for him because he had consistent revenue.

However, the craziest thing that happened to him (and the reason he got rid of the building) was this family he felt bad for and decided to rent to even though they had shit credit. They had a bunch of kids and I don't think either of them worked, but they had a family member who agreed to co-sign or cover rent or something like that.

Anyway, the parents separated right after they moved in, so it was this single mom and her shitty kids that she didn't bother to parent. They caused constant problems for the neighbors, there were daily noise complaints, they trashed the whole building, left garbage around, etc. Also, because Ontario is a communist shithole :marseysaluteussr:, she got so much free money as a "child subsidy" that this b-word was actually making more money from the subsidy than my buddy was at his day job lmao :marseywagie:.

Predictably, they stopped paying rent pretty much immediately, and his other tenants were upset about this shitty family essentially destroying the building. However, again, Ontario is a communist shithole, so even though it's a pretty slam dunk eviction case, the courts basically just told him to get fricked for like a year. On one of his court dates, the tenant just didn't show up so the judge postponed the case for another few months (while she continued to not pay rent). He actually offered to waive like 10k in back rent if they would just leave, and they agreed but didn't actually leave :marseyxd:.

After like a year or something he finally got some kind of eviction order and a he had to pay a sheriff or something to come kick them out. However, in the mean time they completely destroyed the apartment build (not just the apartment) and caused like six figures in damages that forced his other tenants to move out. He was also trying to sell the building at the time, but obviously nobody would touch it until the tenant was gone, so he missed out on that big real estate bubble during covid. In the end I think he lost like 200k because of the tenant, even after insurance paid out for all the damages .

The sad irony is that even though he's a good, compassionate dude, he'll probably never rent to low income people again. Also, the rent he was charging the other tenants was pretty low, and all of them had to find a new place to live in the middle of covid that probably cost double what they were paying my buddy. So in the end, instead of just evicting these people like a sane system would do, three other tenants lost their homes and these people got to cause six figures of property damage and live rent free for a year with zero consequences :gigachad2:.

So yeah, anyway, frick poor people.
