I'm finally trying to push through getting this project and tutorial video done, so I need to get this out of the way -- I know I sound effeminate and neurodivergent, it's just easier to get all the insults out of the way so I can stop being self-conscious about my voice on this.
I already recorded the whole thing, then deleted it because I was talking all slowly and stilted like a nervous kid giving a speech in front of the classroom. This time I tried talking faster and more conversationally, but may have gone overboard and made it impossible to understand.
So what am I doing wrong, how do I improve? It's a shitty microphone, I know.
Also either rdrama hates m4a files or hates files from my phone, so you get an extra layer of mp3 compression added to this.

You wouldn't sound out of place on NPR, so I think you sound fine. You do need to slow down your speaking though

I'll rerecord a little slower tomorrow. Noticed most YouTubers speak in a regular talking speed and i can understand them fine, but they're also not using specific terms.
The script itself can't decide if it's a tutorial or a follow-along
Granted, that clip i posted would've been several minutes into the video when the context was more obvious so me rattling off "autohighbeams" wouldn't be so jarring, plus visuals of things I'm talking about

I didn't mean it in a way btw, I meant it in a “pleasant voice/timbre that won't offend people” way (I don't know if that's better or not)

you should make your voice sound smoother and deeper and more masculine, I think that would help

Gave it another couple rounds and started trying to learn Premiere. I know i need to work on the timing a bit more, and there's several blank spots, but any input so far would be helpful.
At some point i was trying to figure out if i accidentally set the video to 110% speed by mistake

nothing thats too glaring on a cursory listen unlike on your previous attempt where its pretty obvious you might be speaking too quickly much better in that aspect for sure and its EVERYTHING

No.
I'm talking louder than normal which might increase the pitch.
Again i really think i might have accidentally sped up the video slightly, it really seems too fast compared to when I was editing out the breaths.
Or I'm just an effeminate limp-wrist with a weak voice, idk.

i think your mouth is too close to the mic. i can hear you breathing and your consonants are popping.
if you cannot move it further away i would suggest circular breathing ie breathing in through your nose and talking to exhale.

Tried a few different microphone positions, guess it'd be better to have the mic too far away and increase gain if need be. Hard to tell if the overall levels are going to result in too loud or too quiet of a video. I hate when you load one and it's super quiet.
How do so many people get away with using a wired earbud microphone held in front of their mouth?
I'm using a first-gen Astro A40 headset, circa 2011 or so

You need to edit your audio in Adobe Audition or something similar. Look up how to clean narrative audio. I don't feel like going into the details on a cat forum.

Yeah, I know on words like "autohighbeans" i fly through it.
I keep trying to edit the script to get around the weak parts of my voice. Like "push a screw through right away", removed the 'right away' because I peak too hard on the "right" and mumble the "away"
The raw audio is just painful.
The notch on -- the noth - the nojt --- the notch on the the alignment -- the notch tower should be even with the casting seam in the mirror's aluminmmimium (sigh) The notch on the alignment tower should be even with the casting seam in the mirror's aluminum body..

I need to be.
Whenever I'm working on a project, i wish i was cool and popular like Aging Wheels or those woodworking channels and whatnot. A channel of random projects to watch when you're bored.
The other day I was fixing my lawn tractor and thinking about how much i like watching videos of others doing the same, but it was too cold and wet for me to set up my camera.
Or even dumb stuff like modifying my cat tower to add another step for my older cats to climb in
I want people to like me

Yeah its very much a case of don't think just do. The thing with youtube popularity is that it takes time and it's a grind. All the good youtubers had to start from somewhere, like even with the ones that immediately had their style down such as dankpods, the difference between their first vid and their latest is night and day. When you put out a video, watch it back, try find something you could improve on and then research on how to fix it.
More to the point, your voice over in the OP is actually pretty good. Can't notice much noise which is good and mouth sounds are at an acceptable level although as someone else mentioned, moving away from the mic and/or getting a pop filter if you can would help. Delivery is alright but again, thats just something that you gotta learn and gradually improve on so not much point harping on about it. Your voice kinda reminds me of VWestLife so its a pretty good base for a chill random projects channel like you've mentioned.
Keep at it king!

All good points, thanks. I know I'll never really get a following, maybe a dozen people at most, it's more or less just an idle daydream while i work on projects around the house. This video is mostly because others want to do the same retrofit but it's hard to describe in text exactly what to do.
I actually looked up pop filters and did several takes really hitting the Ps hard to see how bad it sounded. Idk how a filter would work with a headset microphone though. Suppose i don't need to be wearing the thing to record.
I was surprised at the relative lack of background noise too, considering the furnace is six feet away.
I hate vwestlife's accent but i am aiming for something like his channel, yeah. Vwestlife, bbishopcm, Adrian's Digital Basement, aging wheels, all kind of style inspirations for me.
What I'm trying to avoid is like Doug Demuro where he's loud and hyperactive and constantly hits high notes and you just want to smack him when he gushes on and on about the shape of the window switches
Oddly it was actually easier to get the words out if i allowed my hands to move at the same time

Ah not too sure about how you'd go about reducing popping with a headset mic. But in terms of line delivery especially if you're not gonna be pointing a camera at your face, do whatever helps even if it is moving your hands like an Italian lol

Lmao.
I played vwestlife for my wife and she said "yeah that's you". I think yeah, my voice is similar to his while my forced speech pattern is closer to this guy
I'm trying to sound more like Cathode Ray Dude but I think my biggest hurdle is that I can't hear myself talk with the headset on. Using Google Recorder provides the best quality raw audio, but it doesn't have a hearthrough option.
Rerecorded several times this past week. Put a lot of effort into minimizing breathes and whistling S's. Then noticed that many popular people just leave their breath in as long as it's not too loud. I'll use an equalizer or deesser as needed.
Listening to the original clip in my truck, the plosives really came through hard didn't they?
