:marsey911roofer: sketchily renting a swanky Airbnb is honestly like illegal immigration :marseychudnotes!:

Found a really cheap deal on Airbnb that seemed too good to be true except it really turned out to be that good and more :marseypikachu2:

While the listing obviously didn't state that it wasn't very legal, you could guess from all the positive :marseywink: :marseywink: reviews

I'll not talk in detail about the whole thing yet in case some fricker snitches and renders me really homeless here but it's literally a serviced apartment in the heart of Thailand for less than $100 (good luck searching) with country club like amenities

But the whole thing felt like some illegal immigrant lived experience I paid for

1. Escorted to our room via the carpark instead of the lobby :marseyxd:

  • felt like arriving via boats and shit

2. Insanely nice room for the price I paid, fully furnished pantry/kitchen, living room, bedroom and a balcony with a view

  • the price I paid to the human traffickers/Airbnb hosts paled in comparison to the first world privileges I received in return

3. It's an open secret except that it's not so enforced but staff and other working locals (property agents etc) seem to give you the “I can tell” look

  • lax immigration policies and frustrated native populace

4. My wife didn't know that the booking was sketchy so she never nooooticed the weird looks from the locals

  • 1st gen vs 2nd/3rd gen migrants in knowing their place? Admittedly it's a bit of :marseymentalgymnastics: :marseymentalgymnastics2:

That device in the photo I posted is where you tap your elevator keys but it constantly scans the faces of people standing in front of the cameras on it and goes “identity not verified” if it doesn't recognise you :marseyxd: most of the time that's the situation with when other “tenants” are with you on the lift and it's a IYKYK type of understanding

I've noooticed that oldstrags tend to stand away from that stupid bot's POV to avoid getting an “identity not verified” so it gets funny when we're all squeezing at the back but there's not enough space so one person's back ends up turned towards the cameras

SMH surveillance state

The best part about south east Asia and South Asia is that you can absolutely get swanky shit for dirt cheap prices. I stayed in one of the best abnb places in Sri Lanka (it was $75 for 2 nights). The owner came on a bicycle in the morning and used to leave me with the keys of the place in the evening. I was alone and the place had like 4 bedrooms, refrigerators chock full of food, a tiny soccer field and a private beach.

In Phuket also I was a paying guest at an enormous villa owned by an old couple for 3 nights for $120

It's practically genetic for :marseyjewoftheorient: to want to lord wealth over their neighbors. Social media is ruining it but Western old money was typically less ostentatious in days gone by.

Western old money literally invented memento mori art so they would always be self-conscious about their wealth

Turns out it's easy to make the little people very angry and do a little French Revolution on your butt when times get tough if you're not careful with the extravagant displays of wealth.

The weird part is hotel rooms will still cost more. I wish Airbnb type setups become more common here, I got a 3 bhk flat with a maid who'd wash the dishes, sweep daily etc in an upscale neighbourhood for less than what a 100 sq ft chicken coop in a proper hotel would cost me. 30 USD a night is basically floor price for a tolerable hotel, good ones start at double that and then luxury ones are just. I saw a screenshot recently comparing Radisson Blu Vietnam and Goa, Vietnam one literally cost 1/10th Indian one. Made me seethe so hard.
