Why do screen replacements cost as much as a new phone!?

Broke my screen replacing the usb port on my Pixel 3a XL, no big deal right? 5 year old phone, very popular, lots of replacement parts!

It's 130 if I buy locally. I could upgrade to a pixel 4a XL for 160.

Even from Aliexpress it's 55! That's 1/3rd the value of the phone!

Why are there no after market parts? I don't need oled! I don't need HD! I'd take a 480 led screen if it was cheap

Every phone maker uses a different panel mounted to a different housing with a different sheet of glass over the front so there are no economies of scale for spare parts in android land. That's my best guess anyway.

For iphones, where there otherwise would be economies of scale with the parts, Apple has armed guards at every point in their supply chain with instructions to kill anybody attempting to buy standalone parts before they make it into the final product. For more details see every Louis Rossman video ever.

I almost bought an archbtw phone, but it had too many reviews about missing or dropped calls

So just scale up the total amount of replacement parts available. Unless you just don't feel like it.

And of course every phone I could buy for parts has a smashed screen.

setting up backup procedure + debug access via scrcpy should happen very early in the setup phase when getting a new phone. You got a relatively cheap lesson here

I don't know if it's because I changed the hardware, or some ubuntu bug, or a bug in ADB but after swapping the usb port for the new one the device is now unauthorized.

Can a mobile javacel shed some light?

are you sure you also enabled the settings that adb certificates don't get periodically deleted (I think the normal lifetime is one week)

honestly, custom roms should disable all this security theater crap by default. Technical users don't need the guard rails, and we already get theft discouragement if the 99.9% of normies have locked down devices

User who install roms already implicitly voiced their opinion on the freedom vs security tradeoff

A lot of roms don't even publish builds for the pixel 3 anymore because the firmware is EOL so it's "insecure"

You don't need a screen :marseybsod: to do that. Just a USB c to hdmi adapter. With something  like this you can plug in a mouse :marseynetgranny: and keyboard :marseytype: too https://i.rdrama.net/images/17235867242936893.webp

Probably not one of those pieces of shit. Those little grey Chinese ones half the time have something fricky, best just get a USB C to USB A cable, which may have just come with the phone connected to a charger anyway.

God I hate those pieces of shit little grey hubs.

Its a Pixel phone. Did you turn off auto-backup? It should auto-backup to your google account everytime its plugged into a charger longer than 2 hours.

Idk, but you should have a screen protector and case. Learned the hard way; now I never buy a new phone without them.

Oh I didn't break the screen doing anything, I broke it replacing the USB port. Pulled a lil too hard on the screen while removing the glue and it broke.

How did you break xem? I want to repair one which had its battery swollen. I don't think it's that hard but I don't want to f#ck it and end up rendering the device useless, and don't want to pay the local repair man because xe is a happy merchant that will probably give me the worst battery imaginable and charge me x3 what it costs

Jump in the discussion.

Tried to replace a battery on one, screen glass on another. There are some phones where replacing the battery is trivial, on others like the one I had it's a complex and delicate task.

I owned a (regular non-XL) 3a once upon a time and I think I remember pixels from that generation having exceptionally fragile displays in terms of removing them to work on the guts of the device

I assume you have already looked into the adb options for pulling data from the phone? Idk what the status of that is these days and you probably have to enable it on the phone (with a functioning screen) before you can pull anything but it's worth a look if you haven't already.

i was so gentle. I just let the glue cool a little too much

It's unauthed now! I don't know it that's because it's locked or I changed out hardware.
