Some of it is just petty jealousy, he's like a microgeneration older than I am but he came up at a time when an @harvard.edu email address + a hairtrigger posting finger was enough to make him a bLoGgY tHoUghT LeAdEr. His shtick was always being the first to post about everything, with whatever r-slurred hot take crossed his mind at the time. Journos loved him because he showed that you could get famous posting unedited misspelled bullshit from your undergrad dorm, rather than wasting your time doing real reporting. This bright young lad and his New Media Journ*lism will save our dying industry and free us from having to wear pants! In retrospect, he was a harbinger for the coming twittertok ADD hellscape.

I don't know if he still does these, but like 5 times a day he used to make these terrible 100-word posts of <<Matty mansplains a graph he doesn't understand>> where he'd copy-paste a chart from some government report that a real reporter had found and then post his own ill-considered midwit interpretation like, "See, if bond yields are down, that means more people want to buy bonds so counterintuitively it's great news for the bond market because it means municipal government is selling so many bonds they can afford to fix failing schools! "

Andrew Sullivan was plying the same trade, but at least he's a witty, iconoclastic cute twink.

Anyway I haven't read him in years, so maybe he's improved but all of Matty's ideas are unoriginal, or terrible, or both. He's a shitty, lazy thinker and a shitty, lazy writer, and IIRC he's a Manhattan prep school nepo baby to boot.
