Japan was outright militarily occupied, you'd think the US would have all the info needed after like, ten years max.
Maybe I'm just schizzing but it seems to line up with the behavior I'd do if I were trying to avoid historical humiliation in an era of increasingly anti-nuclear sentiment, a la Germany or Japan (even with the distinct advantage of not losing the war), by making Nagasaki and Hiroshima tragic sacrifices for the good of all and making the numbers whatever they needed to be.

Tbh there were still tons of Nazis in various bureaucracies, academia, government etc. Quite a few of them washed out because their success in the 3rd Reich was just pure corruption and nepotism and they just fell apart when asked to actually perform, but the rest of them stuck around for decades

It wasn't even seen as ballsy at the time, simply a no-brainer. A fanatical empire was killing our soldiers -- why wouldn't we use every tool at our disposal? Truman didn't even order the bombing -- he approved an existing plan. It wasn't his biggest priority.
