Google Ordered to Identify Who Watched Certain YouTube Videos | Hacker News

In case you wanted to trust Scroogle and the US Government even less!

From Forbes

Federal investigators have ordered Google to provide information on all viewers of select YouTube videos, according to multiple court orders obtained by Forbes. Privacy experts from multiple civil rights groups told Forbes they think the orders are unconstitutional because they threaten to turn innocent YouTube viewers into criminal suspects.

In a just-unsealed case from Kentucky reviewed by Forbes, undercover cops sought to identify the individual behind the online moniker “elonmuskwhm,” who they suspect of selling bitcoin for cash, potentially running afoul of money laundering laws and rules around unlicensed money transmitting.

In conversations with the user in early January, undercover agents sent links of YouTube tutorials for mapping via drones and augmented reality software, then asked Google for information on who had viewed the videos, which collectively have been watched over 30,000 times.

The court orders show the government telling Google to provide the names, addresses, telephone numbers and user activity for all Google account users who accessed the YouTube videos between January 1 and January 8, 2023. The government also wanted the IP addresses of non-Google account owners who viewed the videos. The cops argued, “There is reason to believe that these records would be relevant and material to an ongoing criminal investigation, including by providing identification information about the perpetrators.”......

not without paying capital gains tax

selling something isn't a crime just because you have to pay taxes, is it?

i would assume he was selling in a way to avoid paying taxes, as in literal paper cash from someone. otherwise there is no crime really

Selling something for cash does not preclude paying taxes on the gains afterwards. The mere fact that he's doing something that can make it easier to evade taxes is a pretty flimsy justification for violating the rights of 30000 other people. If they were doing it to track down a serial killer, okay. But for that?

surely he had already not paid the taxes or done some money laundering or something. I mean they really want that guy if they are going to narrow it down from 30k people

Wrong. Tax evasion is the worst crime anyone can commit, and if it helped to catch this filthy degenerate it would be fine if the feds executed every single one of these 30000 people.

Rather than crying about 'privacy' (🙄🙄🙄) issues, they should be glad they get to help one of our federal heroes catch one of the worst criminals of out lifetime.

Can't tell if :marseyoctopus2: or you're just so incompetent that you think border paperwork requirements apply all the time to everyone.

None of these cases has anything to do with a $10k legal limit on cash possession. The $10k number is the reporting threshold at the border. The cases linked are civil forfeitures, which also means there's no protection below $10k, either, in those scenarios.

Isn't that why people put money in banks offshore accounts?

no.

And I'm pretty sure @Teslatruck is talking bullshit.

If you enter the US with more than $10k you have to declare it at customs. But you can bring as much cash as you like. Also if you deposit more than $10k cash at a bank, they may ask where the money comes from. But there's no law against having any amount of cash.

It shouldn't be hard to prove the cash is legitimate. Did you pull it out of the bank? Did you just sell a big ticket item for cash? You should have some form of receipt.

Pretty sure the bank limit is a patriot act law that flags everyone for review. Supposedly for terrorism concerns. Really for tax enforcement.
