I tried to answer this and wrote a biography of the last 2/3 of my dad's life. I think I'm having a little trouble balancing the medication I'm on. It's a good story though, I just gotta proofread it tommorow.

Anyway the short answer is about 20 years ago my dad told me (and I'm translating this into dramanese, he doesn't say any of these words but he should, and my memory isn't perfect): "Vim is for edgelords who think they're hot shit because they use obsolete software. They grew up with luxuries like pressing keys and immediately seeing a response on a screen and think that choosing a shitty text editor makes them street? :marseylaugh: Also 1980s UNIX sucks balls."

:marseyfu#ckyou:

I'll try to call him tomorrow and get some more sharpened insults.

Oh yeah. It's code execution time.

Honestly I use notepad++ for task lists and "how to" files. I love it so much!, and Kate really can't compare.

I use it for when I'm talking on the phone and I have to write something down.

Oh and also I use it for my effortposts. I type out all the text there, including links and captions for images (like "alleged fat girl Evgenia Medvedeva"). Then come back here and insert the images and marseys. And every time notice a spelling error I hadn't caught before.

I have used emacs in the past but it's not great if you don't run it 24/7 :marseynerd:

I get the appeal of vi/m but I honestly use nano for text editing on the server :marseyshrug:

Im gonna be sick

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

perhaps it's a !zoomers thing. It's pretty comfortable when you're used to Windows style GUIs. Modal editing is powerful but it's very vi/m specific so it's pretty easy to not stumble upon it until later.

i hate when i have to use nano, i forget its not vim and type out commands into the file

Jump in the discussion.

nano confuses me though supposedly its easier than vi :marseyhmmm: vi is muscle memory at this point

It's really not a problem lol.

I used to be a pure VIM but I use vim bindings in vscode anyway. Local LLM code completion (via plugins) and multilanguage support (via plugins) cover all my use cases. The most important feature I use is remote sessions, so that all I have to do is set up a dev box with all the beef and then connect to it via VSCode.

I don't whore around for new cowtools to use because my needs are met and i'm not a /g/desktopricerstrag so I have no idea if other IDEs do the above three. I'm going to guess none.

Jump in the discussion.

Some IDE features are nice. autocomplete, especially paired with annotations of arguments and their types, helps a bit. Jump to definition is useful too.

As long as you save more time than you waste by waiting 5 minutes for the IDE to boot up, it can be worth it
