heads-up for anyone that does their own iphone repairs

It is apparently disturbingly easy on iphone 12s to unintentionally separate the display glass from the display metal bracket that clips into the phone frame when you're peeling the glass up and over. I just shredded a face ID sensor cluster as a result of this (:marseyrage:) because the flood illuminator is adhered to the glass independently from the metal bracket. I'm not 100% sure whether this was a fluke and the glass<>bracket adhesive was exceptionally weak and/or the bracket<>frame adhesive was exceptionally strong, or if this is more widespread.

I predict I'll make it about 2 weeks without face ID before I cave and buy a new one.

Only other report of this I can find online https://old.reddit.com/r/mobilerepair/comments/xx7519/metal_frame_over_internals_of_iphone_12_did_i/

Dorks who spend their whole life on computers discuss how computers destroyed their self-worth

The other day I was talking to a psychologist about [difficult personal situation which I am unable to discuss publicly] and she said to me "This must be really damaging to your self-worth." And, my honest internal reaction to her statement (although I didn't say it out loud to her) was "Self-worth, what is that?" Because I'm not sure if I have any? I don't mean that in the negative sense that I think I am worthless or anything. It is just that in my mind "self" and "worth" are concepts which do not intersect. Maybe that's an neurodivergent trait.

The flip side of detaching self-esteem from technical competency is that you can make very strong assertions without being arrogant. :marseyroman:

Every user on HN has a score (up votes vs down votes) based on reactions to comments and submissions.

How many of us will not be our authentic selves in a comment because of fear of how others might react? I know that I have done this.

Oh no, what if the orangesite doesn't like my hot take on trans bathrooms at Rustconf :soycrychicken:

"a server tells me her manager won't give her the Saturday-night money shift until she has more followers"

Does this really happen? Or maybe just in the USA?

Why would I, as a customer, care about server's follower count? Is it somehow correlated with their performance?

Not exactly the same, but some friends and I have a tradition of going to a local equivalent to Hooters on Mother's Day since it's the only place that you don't need a reservation. The last time we went the server gave us all an official card with her name on it where we could go to leave feedback for her.

Completely unrelated, but this hot girl talked to me one time. :marseybeingnerd:

AITA for complaining to HR that my colleague is using hate symbols

Context: My (27f) sister is a trans woman, and I'm very sensitive to discrimination, dog whistling and hate speech, including memes and emojis used to harass and ridicule vulnerable people. My colleagues at work know about my sister, as she picked me up at the office a couple of times.

A couple of weeks ago a colleague (25-30m) at work uploaded a bunch of custom emojis, like "Chad" or "Pepe the Frog" and started using it on slack, on shared all company channels. I did not assume bad intent, but as these memes are often used in hate speech and trolling, it rubbed me the wrong way. I messaged him privately, and politely asked him to stop using these emojis, I provided some links to why these are sensitive and best to be avoided in workplace settings. His reply was literally "Lol mate". At this point I got a sneaky suspicion that he isn't using these emojis innocently, so I took screenshots of where he used them, and of my messages to him, and forwarded to HR. HR agreed that it's best to err on the side of caution, and said to leave it with them. We are an absolutely no hate speech and no discrimination company, and it's written into our Code of Conduct which all employees have to sign. I don't know what exactly did HR do, but now I heard from another colleague that I'm an butthole for getting a guy in trouble at work over "some stupid emoji".

AITA?

Arc is an "alternative" paid browser for ...? I'm not really sure but they got a bunch of VC money which they've apparently spent on some insecure out of the box backend (it's a modern browser that you must log in to) from Google called Firebase and now there's a big exploit where hackers can gain access to your entire browser without you even visiting a web page

Their cofounder and CTO, Hursh Agrawal :marseytunaktunak: , arrives to calm the natives but instead riles them up further as they are now demanding his resignation and head on a stick

https://i.rdrama.net/images/17268640078427947.webp

According to this article, Arc requires an account and sends Google's Firebase the hostname of every page you visit along with your user ID. Does this make Arc the least private web browser currently being used?

I'm Hursh, cofounder and CTO of The Browser Company (the company that makes Arc). Even though no users were affected and we patched it right away, the hypothetical depth of this vulnerability is unacceptable. We've written up some technical details and how we'll improve in the future (including moving off Firebase and setting up a proper bug bounty program) here: https://arc.net/blog/CVE-2024-45489-incident-response.

I'm really sorry about this, both the vuln itself and the delayed comms around it, and really appreciate all the feedback here – everything from disappointment to outrage to encouragement. It holds us accountable to do better, and makes sure we prioritize this moving forward. Thank you so much.

Was the post written for HN users only? I cannot see it on your blog page (https://arc.net/blog). It's not posted on your twitter either. Your whole handling seems to be responding only if there is enough noise about it.

Hursh, can you please respond to the above commenter? As an early adopter, I find it fairly troubling to see a company that touts transparency hide the blog post and only publicly "own up to it" within the confines of a single HN thread.

Comments further down are concerned that on each page load, you're sending both the URL and a(n identifiable?) user ID to TBC. You may want to comment on that, since I think it's reasonable to say that those of us using not-Chrome (I don't use Arc personally, but I'm definitely in the 1% of browser users) are likely to also be the sort of person concerned with privacy. Vulnerabilities happen, but sending browsing data seems like a deliberate design choice.

There isn't really anything you can do to convince me that your team has the expertise to maintain a browser after this. It doesn't matter that you have fixed it, your team is clearly not capable of writing a secure browser, now or ever.

I think this should be a resigning matter for the CTO.

no mention of the pitiful bounty reward (2000 usd). only sorry and thanks. Please award this person a proper bounty.

I had to manage some servers at work today, and our hosting does not allow us root. :marseylaptopangry2: Unfortunately, the admins that do have root don't do what I need the first, second or third time I'm telling them. :marseyantiwork2: So I resorted to simply messaging them the commands, "put this line in that config file, then run mv here and chown there", essentially using Slack as my root shell. :pepehacker: I complained about how silly this was to a :soysnoo: colleague, and his response was, "But I don't want root, what if I run rm -rf on the wrong folder". :soysnoo4talking: I found this very funny, because it exactly reflects his political :marseycomrade: beliefs, of outsourcing everything to some authority (the state / the admins :marseybootlicker2: ), even though the authority is demonstrably inferior compared to simply doing the job oneself, and only has its position due to some abstract concept of "responsibility". In summary: own guns, don't pay taxes, always login as root :marseyancap:

For all I care, the author is a Marxist idiot, who most likely manipulated the results in order to advance his political anti-White agenda. So, he and his project can die.

Hah, HN incels-leftists dare to comment on one of the greatest political entities in the history. So pathetic. But, let's just observe what do we have after you - San Francisco. And what did we have back then, when no democracy existed - Vienna. Enjoy eating your own shit.

Omg, this bullshit again!! You leftists are absolute idiots

Total BS. This anti-Nazi propaganda never gets old, while the reality is that it's just brainwashed copycat of same old lie. Funny, that there is NOTHING like that for the communists. Which are by far worse. And what this "author" accuses Nazism for is actually communism. But hey, that's the beloved Democratic party we are talking about.

California leftists and democ-rats can go and taste their medicine instead.

Junkies are killing themselves in fewer numbers. Orange sight neurodivergents point to Narcan bring available over the counter: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41579343

Unrelated but this guy also keeps plan b in his car https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41580031

If you are even tangentially related to someone who could use it, I would recommend keeping a supply on hand. I keep narcan, plan b, and other inventory in my vehicle's sub trunk. Total cost for this inventory was under $100. It is, in my opinion, a component of a first aid kit.
