I mean, if you have Zuckerberg money, why not be prepared? It's not like there are tradeoffs for him.

I just wonder - why Hawaii? Small, isolated, resource-poor and likely to be nuke central should war start.

Blowing millions on a bunker you'll crawl into to die isn't "being prepared" though

The problem with New Zealand is that if shit really does collapse someone will be able to cobble together a small fleet and invade it pretty easily

Maybe the military considers it highly important for strategic reasons and he figures that it will be one of the more protected places? The US also has an advanced missle defense system, maybe he trusts its effectiveness?

If anyone thinks missile defenses are good enough to stop ICBM swarms theyre delusional.

At best theyre meant to reduce loss so the US "wins" the exchange, even if that means only 60% of the pop dies vs 85%.

Jump in the discussion.

Yeah I don't think everyone realizes how unstoppable ICBMs are. Upper atmosphere they're dumping insane amounts of aluminum particles to jam satellite detection and then 10 warheads are traveling at hypersonic speed to individual targets from just one ICBM.

I'm sure they're even more effective these days than back in the Cold War as well.

When I saw this discussed on reddit a few weeks ago people were saying his bunker is located on an island far enough away from the Amerikkkan bases, navy, whatever, that he'd probably be fine in his bunker in the event of Jap attack 2.0.

Is it true? Idk, but I'm sure he considered it. Still, you'd think he'd likely be in Commiefornia when SHTF. Seems like a long way to have to fly in an apocalyptic scenerio. Especially if it happens quick and without warning.

Kauai has lots of military bases. Maybe depending on wind patterns he wouldn't get much fallout on his part of the island but it doesn't seem like a particularly safe choice.

As long as he's not on Oahu he'd be fine, and even if he were the 5 megaton blast in this simulation is on the high end of what could be expected (modern nukes don't need to have yields that high thanks to missile accuracy improvements, so for example most western-made modern nukes are in the 100-500 kiloton range ie less than 1/10th as large)

Depends on the island. Oahu is gone but the islands on the outskirts, like Kauai or the Big Island, are far enough not to be caught in a nuclear blast.

If China hits us with 10,000 warheads (roughly what we had pointed at us in the late cold war) they can spare one for Kauai.

Why tf would they hit an island with less than 70,000 people with not strategic importance?

And China doesn't even have many nukes

Jump in the discussion.

Has some military bases on it. Not terribly important but enough to get in the top 10,000. And it's got an airport with a long runway. Every one of those will be targeted.

But China doesn't even have that many nukes

It will soon. They've been vastly expanding their arsenal in the last couple decades and there's no reason for them to stop. Remember the US reached something like 30,000 in the early 1960s already.
