https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/free-kicks#types-of-free-kick

Ball enters the goal

if a direct free kick is kicked directly into the opponents' goal, a goal is awarded

if an indirect free kick is kicked directly into the opponents' goal, a goal kick is awarded

if a direct or indirect free kick is kicked directly into the team's own goal, a corner kick is awarded

This is what it would be if footy ball were a civilized sport made by humans instead of British "people"

I really had no clue. I thought it would be a foul.

I knew indirect free kicks would result in a goal kick if they went inside goal but that a corner is awarded when it goes inside your own goal was unknown to me.

Then again to shoot a free kick into your own goal you have to be so giga-brained that a giga-brained response like awarding a corner makes sense.

If it wasn't multiple choice I'd have no idea but based on the three I would have guessed corner. Goal wouldn't make sense because why would that be a question? Indirect free kick it could be but it doesn't seem like something that would be a foul so I guess it's just treated as if you kicked it behind any other point of the goal line and gets a corner

So I suppose it's logical that the equivalent would be a corner if it's kicked into your own goal. I'd never thought about that possibility before and wonder how that could possibly happen lol

Maybe if there's some r-slurred goal differential situation it's meant to stop own goals on purpose

It's happened a few times in international tournaments

How is that even possible? Scoring a free kick against your own goal?

I was correct but I was a youth referee for like 4 years from age 12-16

I mean isn't that common knowledge? You cannot score a goal from that position, but the ball leaves the play area. So the other team gets possession of the ball, and at that side of the field it's a corner. It's similar with no offside from throw ins. People always "omg why how?".

The only rule that I still don't understand is when pens are given and when VAR interferes with them.
