Neuroimaging studies generally aren't reliable or informative on their own; they need to be paired with one or more cognitive and/or behavioral tasks to really find out what's going on. There are a lot of boilerplate experimental paradigms they could use to figure out the extent of the effects of the reduction like a goombling task
