How was marriage already not set to a minimum of 18? :marseyxd: I know it required parental approval most likely but still.

You could be legally emancipated :marseybigbrain:

  • In 2018, Sununu signed a bill to raise the minimum age of marriage to 16.

  • For more than a hundred years, the law had allowed 13-year-old girls and 14-year-old boys to get married with parent and court approval.

  • On Thursday, two amendments were proposed to allow some exceptions for those under 18 to get married if they have been legally emancipated.

I think if they've been emancipated then it's fair. I've just heard lots of stories of like 15 year old girls being r*ped and then pressured by their parents into marrying the dude much older than them and it just seems like a generally bad situation.

I'd be ok with teenagers getting married as long as the dude they're marrying is also a minor as a requirement. That's totally fine.

I get that and even had a couple get married at 17 in my hs class because of a pregnancy ( they just ended up getting divorced anyway since the dude was an r-slured alcoholic but anyway) Just seems like if 18 is gonna be the age of adulthood though then they should be consistent with it, also because the parental approval factor can still lead to abuse:

Edit:

https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2015/10/28/452540839/children-get-married-in-the-u-s-too-15girls

"Tahirih also compiled data that included the age and gender of those getting married in the state of Virginia. Between the years 2004 and 2013, records showed brides and grooms as young as 12. In 2013, there were 199 brides and 28 grooms age 17 and under. More specifically, nine brides (and no grooms) were 15; 58 brides and 8 grooms were age 16; and 132 brides and 20 grooms were 17."

That's a lot more underage brides than grooms :marseydeadinside2:

I'd be fine with it if they banned underage girls from marrying adult men. The ban on underage marriage is usually because it leads to abuse by an older partner.

I feel minimum should be 16 with some real stringent conditions until 18 (groom no more than 2-3 years older, with express consent of the parents of both parties, and maybe something else I'm not thinking of).

Even then, I'd be leery.

I think those are fair requirements. But yeah. It should be treated with a lot of caution.

Everyone going to highschool wasn't really a thing until 1940 or so. And even after that in the more rural states dropping out a year or two in wasn't completely unheard of. That's why the GED exists.
